Hi all!

I just started building a simple personal webpage on my computer with Microsoft Word. I can't seem to put images in it though:confused:. I want to put images that are already found/hosted on the internet.

However, when I insert images through Insert-Picture-From File and type the internet address of the image there, Word automatically downloads the image and places it in a folder called "index_files" (the "index" part is the name of the webpage). That way, I have to upload the image to my webspace, even though the image is already on the Net.

So, how do I tell Word to not download the image to my computer and then upload it to my webspace (i.e. keep it linked from where it is on the web).

Thanks in advance

Abid

you might not be able to...in Word that is. My simplest advice is to change the resulting HTML code that word generates in a simple text editor like Notepad, or a code editor. Study a tutorial or two on writing html and basic web sites, and you'll learn how to do a number of important things, including setting the address of an image. See www.webmonkey.com for great novice tutorials.

You can in word by moving all the images to the doc location, and using local references... I think.

If you want the word look, but in a true web editor: http://www.fckeditor.net/

other editors for the web as alternatives:

I am looking at upgrading my webpage generator, but it is paid, webplus from serif. It's not dreamweaver, but it can put together pages fast and easy.

Lets just say frontpage is better for web than MSWord. ;) and you already know my opinion of frontpage. ;) :D

the intent for the web output of MSword was never really to produce a full set of webpages with images and the like. But say you did a report for school, got an A+ on it and want to share it with the rest of the world. Of course I would tell you to make a pdf and offer the pdf as a download, but hey, most people think web, they think HTML. So Word offers the HTML output. You pull up that handy-dandy report, and save as HTML, and link, and done. :) as long as you didn't have images. :D

*Thread hijack warning*

So, vomiting aside, what is the best (easiest) WYSIWYG web page creator/designer out there? I'm don't mind if I have to pay for it. I really need something good yet simple. Thanks.

That all depends on what you want to do and how much work you want to put into it.

I've been through all the free ones, plus frontpage. They are good for building single pages. I wanted something to build a whole site fast, so I switched to a template based WYSIWYG editor by serif.com. It does not have some of the power of the bigger editors, but I can change the templates and create the page in moments.

For more professional looking sites, I would find something else. All the templates even customized ones seem rather cartoony. I modified the template for my page so that it doesn't look like everyone elses, still, it doesn't look as nice as JackAxe's, but then he's the artist, I'm just a lowly poet. ;)

Meh. I knew I was going to get lambasted for it, but it had to be done, so I might as well got it over with.

I don't even use the damn thing.

I'll just be editing pages on our company's web site. I don't need to create the whole site. It needs to be WYSIWYG because I have NO html skills. I also need a program to ftp with. Thanks again for your help.

What I use is Dreamweaver MX. Easy to use, with some powerful features under the hood, and generates the cleanest and fastest code out of any WYSIWYG page builders.

Zack, I've heard that's a good product. I was kind of shocked to see the price. Might there be something half-way decent in the one to two hundred dollar range?

now you know another reason why I liked serif. I don't want to spend a lot of time doing my site, I prefer writing poetry or doing programs over site design. So I can toss my site together in minutes for under $100. I can, and did, modify the templates in under an hour and have my site redesigned shortly thereafter.

Take a look over at www.thefreecountry.com especially for nVu http://nvu.com/

If you are familiar with what is free, you know what level of pay you are willing for more and better features.

SamCat, if you get this mesage before they take down OT I just want to say thanks for the suggestions. I downloaded nVu and it is EXACTLY what I was looking for. It is very easy to use and is perfect for what I want to do right now. Thanks again. :)
