View Full Version : Looking at the NX to upgrade

I have been a T-615 owner since the series debuted. As such, I've always looked down on the NX/NR series for their "bulkiness." Yesterday I was at Best Buy and figured, hey, why not? So, I got them to unlock the NX-70v and played around with it. They even let me slid it into my pocket to test the size and weight. surprisingly, i'm now in love with it... they have two NX-70's open-box for $400 each. there are two small scratches where the hinge bumped against the metal display holder, but otherwise one still even has the stickers on it. my question is: is there any NX-series without the CF slow or camera? I very much like the shape and form of the clamshell design, especially now, but I also would prefer to upgrade to an OS5 device instead of an OS4.1 device-- especially since this upgrade would be passing by the TG50...

At the minimum, I am looking at the non-camera NR-device. Though the 66mhz is an upgrade from 33, it's not exactly worth $300. How does the thumboard on the NX compare to the NR? Also, is the VG area skinnable? Not a big concern, but it'd be a nice bonus... Right now refurbished NR-series are going for $329 on SonyStyle.

There is an NX series without a camera.  They all have the CF slot.

They're nice.   I had one.  I returned it before the 30 days was up for the NX because the battery wouldn't hold a charge.  The NR & NX keyboards are VERY similar.  The NZ's is dramatically different.

The VG is absolutely skinnable on all PDAs that have it so far . . . so is the status bar, for that matter.  It's a LOT of fun to play around with.   ALSO, do a search here at CS for WonderSkin and take a look at what that can do.

Hope this is helpful.  If you can, I would encourage you to go with an OS5 machine.  They're ALL fast.  Coming from a 615 you'll be shocked.  I promise.

If you don't want the CF slot or the camera, why not get the TG50. The screen seems to be well-protected on it, and you get the advantage of the form factor that's not "bulky". Right now, the camera and the screen size are the only things keeping me with the NX, and they're barely holding me over. I REALLY like the TG!!

There are LOT more differences between the NX and NR models than meet the eye. I had a friend who bought an NR off eBay thinking it was an NX... man was that a disappointment.

Here's some of the differences:

66Mhz in the NR vs 200Mhz in the NX

(AND NX has an Intel XScale processor. This greatly increases its ability to play multimedia, including MPEG videos)

Limitations of the NR:

No voice record
No video capture
OS 4.1 instead of 5.0
Less camera resolution
No WiFi slot
Unlikely to be able to use MemoryStick Pro (the NX can)

The NX is the way to go... I would suggest if you can't afford an OS 5 device at this point, just wait and see what Sony comes out with. Prices on the existing models are sure to drop. :-(

have you actually seen the TG50, though? everyone on that forum seems to dispise the keyboard, but the reviews say it is better than the NX or NZ series. i played around with the NX keyboard for a good 45 minutes and i love it-- not a problem typing at all. if the TG50 thumboard is as good as that, and it's supposed to be better, than i'll go with the TG50, no doubt.

this is the way i see it: i want the NX for the voice recorder, OS5, 200mhz (meaning video playback) and MP3 player. I really love the Hi-Res+ screen, but I am coming from a T615 so I won't miss it, in fact it would reduce my "shock therapy" since I won't have to get used to a larger screen. Once my local stores get the TG50, I'm going to check out the keyboard and see if I like it... The reason I am thinking about the NX is mostly the $400 tag on those opened-items at Best Buy... besides, the TG50 will be there by 30 days so I could just return it then :)

I say go for the NX and see how you like it. Sounds like you have nothing to lose

The nr graffiti skins are becoming less and less, and os5 apps that dont support 4 and under are becoming more plentiful. get NX-60(no camera) if u can get a betterdeal or if not get one of the 2 best buy ones. The hi-res+ screen is great for reading and moves not to mention tons of others!!
