For the longest while I wondered why my zoom button was greyed out on my NZ's camera screen. It wasn't a big deal. Then I realized that its because the zoom is really just an interpolation of the lower res settings.

So any res below the highest (and the best of course) can do a fake software zoom where as the highest res, the one we use the most, can't becuase the software can't interpolate that high.

Ok, it prolly said this on the box somewhere but frankly, thats a big stinkin cheat if you ask me.

That's pretty interesting. On the NX I can still zoom when on the highest allowed resolution. I wonder if the NX could do higher resolution then based on this observation.

I had a nx for a while, the camera zoom seemed to be software interpolation as well (software zoom.) Its kinda cheesy as most people associate zooms with hardware zooms.

The zoom is not "greyed" out on the higher resolutions. What are you talking about? I can zoom on my NZ90.

Right, no optical zoom on either NX or NZ!

Dave, very well put and explained!

correct. Hence the reason I would prefer to buy a camera then spend the extra money for a NZ

If you want a real camera, buy one.
When you try to combine a camera, with a mp3 player, pda, internet browser, ect, ect, you will never find any of them being the best.

The NX/NZ are good at combining all of those.
but not great.

Merlin,

Let me just rephrase what you said...

Yes, NZ 90 is great as you won't find anything better combining all the elements together.

Of course, if you want a better camera, you will find one in a isolated format (just a camera), if you want a better computer (a PDA is a computer !!) you get a decent PC with a real keyboard and a 17" monitor, but if you want mobility and portability in a small element, you have to go back to the existing devices and the NZ is to my understanding the best compromise available today. Ok, that will last for two or three months, when Sony will come out with another bomb.

I bought my NZ thru my maintenance plan, so it only cost (at this point) $300 - $200 for the cost difference between the NX and the NZ and an extra $100 for the new warranty - damn vicious cycle if you ask me.

So, would I have paid $800 straight out for the NZ? No way, I like it but I could have bought a great $400 PDA (clie) and a great, small $400 digital camera and have have the best of both worlds.

Here we go again!

I'll let you interpret this comment as you wish.

That would be a good option, having both nice devices, but again, you would have two and not both in one.

It is more a question of what you expect from it. I made my choice and did sold my camera and my previous pda (a Palm T) to have the NZ, so for me it was a good choice for the moment, as the camera I would be willing to have does not cost 400 US but many more bucks.

That is what we can call a free world.

Independently of your choices, enjoy !
