View Full Version : Taking Out Battery -> Hard Reset?

Has anyone experienced this?
I was curious to see how the battery looks like today, so I opened the battery lid and took out the battery. Ooh, it didn't look cute at all, so I put it back, turned on my CLIE and found out that I just somehow hard-reset it......
Damn, I only took the battery out for less than 5 seconds and it erased all the thingy in RAM already? So how am I able to change the battery? Or is it just me?
Has anyone experienced my situation? (No, it's not from Toshiba)

Yup, same problem. I thought that the button cell was supposed to prevent this.
Looks like I'll need to remember to do a back-up before I switch the second battery that I just payed too much for.
Oh Well!!!!!!

Treated like a guest ;-)
Boy, I post so seldom, and the one time I do, it doesn't get counted.
I would like to know just what that button cell IS for.
Later.............

The button battery should provide backup power to preserve the contents of memory (just don't turn the unit on when the main battery is out!). I think the manual says a fully charged backup battery should be good for 12 hours. I've removed the main battery twice and never had a hard reset.

I've removed mine several times and have had no hard resets. Maybe your NZ has a defect. It shouldn't do that.

Very good advice and I could see where it might be possible if the unit was on. Try it before reloading your software.

I have a spare battery and therefore I have swapped between both batteries too many times to remember the count. I have never run into any problem. I would estimate that the longest amount of time that my NZ90 has not had the main battery in it and has had to maintain its RAM from the button battery is about a minute so I really haven't put the button battery too a real test but it does work.

Thanks folks,
My second battery just arrived. When I get home I'll try it making VERY sure I'm powered down.

I did that last night but not with the same results... took it out and put it back with no issues...

Thanks everone,
I backed up everything, made sure the unit is turned off, and tried to take out my battery one more time. It went hard-reset again... And I tried again 5 minutes later with same result... :( So I guess I need to call SonyStyle later.
But, thanks for reading my post, everyone

The internal backup battery or something is defective as it's losing all the memory.
Thank you for the feedback!

I pulled that stunt with my battery too and had to do a reset, but, it was shortly after I got it so the button cell may not have charged

Just need to be careful and backup everything into ms as this is a dangerous test to the cell battery as you don't know when the cell batt lose it power.

As I promised to report:
Making sure everything pwered off, switched in new battery. (after charging all night showed 2 cycles, so it does appear that Sony is doing some testing. The battery that shipped with the unit showed only 1 cycle after first charging)
Powered up and.............
Everything running wonderful. No losses.
Tried switching batteries back and forth..... No Problem. :D
Thanks again people.
aaronchow, I would have to say your kit has an issue.

I too, have problems with this rechargable button battery not working to spec (I've had my unit only a few days).
At first, I thought it was that this backup button-battery was not properly charged (I had a habit of ripping the unit off the charger almost as the light winked out for the Smart Lithium charge finishing). In the last 48 hours I conducted a test that appears to prove the problem:
1. Charged the main battery to full power (charge light off).
2. Left the unit in the charger for a further 24 hours as the maunal states.
3. Took the unit from the charger, and completely discharged the main battery to the point of auto-power off (the unit wouldn't turn back on when I pressed the power button).
4. Left it off the charger for a further 1.5 - 2 hours (approx).
5. Returned the unit to the charger and let it power up for an hour or so (enough to be able to flick it on).
The NZ had reset, I had lost everything in RAM (as per a hard reset).
Theoretically, you should be able to do the same thing by removing the main battery, but I wanted a real-world 'on-the-road' scenario...
... I'm off to the retailer later to return this unit after speaking with Sony Australia, who agreed I had a problem...
regards,
Darren.

So do u test it again with your new set?
How long is the button battery can support the nz from being lost memory due to empty main battery if it s already fully charge for 24hours?

re: How long the backup 'button battery' should last:
The 'ReadeMeFirst' documentation says around 12 hours after discharge of the main battery... which to my mind is still pretty poor (other units - my old IIIc for example - lasted for up to a week!).
Still, should be enough to get it into the charger ...
I've opened the button battery area (there's a little screw-protected panel on the left of the unit, just below the voice record button)... and the battery looks ok ... connected in there onto the board, and wrapped nice and tightly for +ve / =ve connection to the wiring, but it can't be charging properly I suspect...
Have a look through the readme first doco for details - this is supposed to be a user-accessible battery but when I look at mine, its wrapped in a tape that I wouldn't like to pull apart ...!
Anyway, I have agreement with the retailer for a swap, as soon as a new unit arrives from Sony Oz (next couple of days). I'll rerun the test and see what happens and post the result here...

Thanks for reporting back to us, and, yes, apparently it looks like my CLIE has to go back to Sony for a service.
I switch the battery quite offen (about 2 times per day) as I constantly surf the web via WiFi, and it hard-reset itself 2 out of 5 times. But I'm kind of used to it since I backup everything in RAM before I take the battery out.
