TreoCentral member, "mines", creates his own cable and switches carriers from Sprint to Verizon. [details (http://www.1src.com/?m=show&id=716)]

Wow! Very exciting... as I want this device and I have Verizon.

That's pretty darn cool.

I'm also on Verizon, and while the 650 isn't my cup of tea, it's still highly interesting!
Love a good hardware hack, especially when it works.

(I'm still smarting from my failed attempt to graft in an extended cable to my Clie Game Controller. w/pics no less!!!)

Excellent stuff!

Very cool but it is a shame one has to go to such lengths.

well you essentially have to jump through these hoops if you want to active a non-verizon phone on verizon, etc for any other carrier to active a phone they do not carry. if you do this, just be persistent with the CSR to active your esn, because it typically takes a couple of tries.

generally when you do something like this, you lose most of the other features, but what's great about this is that pretty much all the features (and you can use snapper mail for picture sending) still work, including the DUN fix.

you can also a prepaid altell phone from walmart, and have it actived on verizon (cheaper and you can get a nokia if you want it).

on the other hand, as reported today, if verizon buys sprint, this could be moot down the road.

that's one of the challenges with cdma, in that the phone is typically programmed for the carrier, vs a gsm phone which is not. in my living area, gsm is not too good, and since i value voice quality over data, i go with verizon.

in very extreme cases, i've read of some people doing this with korean cdma phones, but they lose all the other functionality besides voice.

mines does the homework, also did it with an early treo 600 as well...
these folks are real enthusiasts...imagine spending ~$500 to see if you can do it or not....hats off to mines

I'm in the same situation. I'd love to go to Cingular for the phones, but I'm with Verizon because I like to actually be able to place calls. Hopefully GSM coverage will improve in my area in the near future. I may make the jump when my 2-year contract with Verizon runs out in September.
