now i have had my NX70V/U (gunmetal) for over 2 years now and i feel that i should have waited a little longer and got something with wireless capability or simething that is a little smaller that still packs as much power at a small form factor. What i am saking is are you happy with your purchase with your NX70??
because in the long term, i am not!

I am happy with mine, even tough I had to spend some extra money buying a Bluetooth and a WiFi card. I did not think any of the Clies that came after it justified the price. And now that we have all this uncertainty about what will happen with PDAs (will they disappear be replaced by smartphones? what will happen to Palm OS Cobalt? or will laptops running XP become so small that you won't have to carry a PDA?), I don't plan to upgrade in the short term; I will wait one more year to see what happens before making a decision.

I absolutely love it! No other PDA, mark my words, is a desirable and affordable and feature packed as the NX.
300MHz (max) CPU
Flip&Twist design: protective when closed, productive when open, sleek when folded
Thumb-board
2x expansion slots - a feat marked only by the HE330 & As Dana, niche devices (PPC aside)
320x480 screen
Camera
Wireless capability - astounding range
Bluetooth capability
Still compatible with the latest apps, and has many specialised because it has been out some time
VERY cheap to buy these days.
Actually quite a slim form factor, considering the screen and thumbboard.

No other PDA has all of these features. The UX comes close, but its niche design and slow unoverclockable processor speed (HHE good for movies, bad when raw power is needed) allow it to drop behind.

I know I am going to keep my NX for up to 4 years now that Sony is out of the game and there will not in the forseeable future be any better hardware from Palm. That's time enough to let Cobalt settle in, and that will be the ultimate reason for upgrading - better software, which is incompatible with the NX.

I am totally, 100%, utterly happy with my NX70. I have owned a ton of different Sony PDAs and I love what my NX has to offer. I've got wireless on mine as well, and I can say that's not a huge selling point for me. Although I love having wireless, it's not really effective on these devices because of battery life. It just uses too much power to run wireless. I usually use mine just to hotsync or to check my mail while in the, urr.....bathroom. :) Otherwise, I love the screen size and the size of the device actually. I like to actually feel that I have something in my hand instead of feeling like I might break it. The enhanced IR is also nice since I can turn the volume down on those loud TVs in restaurants....or change the channel to something better! I'm like treffmeister, I'll have this one for another few years until Cobalt does something awesome. Or until I find a smartphone that has what I need..

In the tech world, no matter how long you wait, there'll always be something newer and shinier coming out shortly after you buy your latest greatest toy. You just can't keep up.

I've been through a few PDA's, starting with a Handspring Visor that was given to me, followed by a Clie N710, and now an NX80. All have been great. The NX80 will probably be around for awhile. No BlueTooth and its not a combo PDA/Phone. But it still meets my needs with the add-on wireless card and camera.

So, yes I'm very happy and don't see any need for upgrading any time soon.

ditto here star bukk. My ONLY gripe of the NX80 is the crappy video it takes for the MP's its supposed to have as opposed to the NX70 which is a whole lot better. the "flash" (or as i use it...the flashLIGHT) isnt useful at all because pics are blurry when you try to use it unless its a totally still object.

but thats what my DSC-t1 is for instead! =D

Gunmetal? That would have made my NX70 even better... I love mine. I think those of us who purchased it at the time BOUGHT the most worthwhile PDA on the market... processor, features... it was such an eye-catcher... and THEN slowly we saw the rest of the mobile market catch-up and yes perhaps pass us.

BUT, I don't see anything on the market that impresses me. Sure faster processor (worse battery), no PalmOS with both built-in BT nor WiFi (again even MORE battery drain), COBALT? (pipedream)... probably the only other PDA I would even consider is an European TH-55...

I will get keep this NX70 for a LONG long time... eh, many people have multiple handhelds... if it's time for you to move one... goodluck.

I just wish that we would have had landscape/portrait sys option AND the standard sound API =/; 11MB? I live off of ZL.

I bought a Zire 72 in June and love it but I haven't used it in weeks. Back to the NX70 because of that gorgeous screen. The Zire 72 will go with me on trips, but the NX70 is my daily driver. An awesome swiss-army knife of a PDA.

As far as power goes you still cant go wrong with this. And if you dont plan on ever selling it on ebay, try to utilize JackFlash to hack into your ROM for extra memory and the MOST fun power-user thing you can do, Overclock it (or underclock too on certain apps you dont need too much) to maximize performance and battery life.

Im constantly griping about this but I wish the video cam of the nx70 was on the nx80. Its quality is probably the best of all of Sonys Clies.

I you absolutlely MUST get something new... PLEASE sell me your gunmetal! =D

My NX73 is over a year old(bought it the first month it came out)
My first handheld, very happy with it, and will be using as long as it's alive.

Yes, in the tech industry, things usually tend to get better quite fast. But to my astonishment, after all that time, I haven't seen one single handheld that I know of surpass the NX. Just think, the double expansion slot feature already beats about 80% of everything on the market, the big screen beats more of the PPC's without VGA and is still the best of palms if you don't count the extreemly expensive VZ90. Speed and simplicity of the palm OS beats all PPC's. Then swival screen makes it one of the few that can actually "stand up"--great for taking pictures.

The TH55 is the next best thing you can get IMHO, but the lack of a CF slot, graffiti 2 and striped down clie softwares keeps me away.

Believe me, although you could get a smaller form factor, you could never get as much features.

I really love my NX80V. If I need to decide for a new one device and take into account non-NX options, must stay with a refurbished NX80V versus a T5. But T5 has plastic case, the extra memory is like a flash card inside the board, and only has one slot for cards. The unique limitation for NX series is memory, but with JackFlash you could take use of 15MB extra space from FlashROM in the NX80V, plus the usable 16MB of RAM.

totally happy with it. Had it for 2 years now, bought a wifi card for about 50$ at the beginning of this year.
I had a PPC t-mobile MDA2, but sold it again to grab my trusty NX70...
pda's don't offer much more nowadays.
I'm still dazzling ppl when I take some pictures with my Canon 10D DSLR and show them on my Clie 5 secs after that.
The clamshell (wich I DIDN"T LIKE when I bought the unit) is actually unmatched screen protection. I would want it on my pda even if the the other half wouldn't have a keyboard (I don't use that).

It's a 2 year old unit and there's nothing in the market that really surpasses it worthy of an upgrade. Heck, most of the topfeatures of the TT5 are allready on my NX.

It shows alot of wear and tear, the edges are shining white now ;), but looks quite cool actually :)

Ive had my NX60 since last christmas, and allthough I have a UX series also, i just cant bring myself to getting rid of the NX. Im so much in love with the screen and would rather watch a movie on that than my UX. Dont see me giving up the compactflash slot ever. Did i mention the screen is just so sexy

Totally happy with my NX80. Grumpy at times as I dont feel the hardware durabilty is as good as it should be - espically that damn power slide switch.
If I was buying anything atm, it would be another nx80.

got my NX80 in May (had a NX60 since July 2003) and I have nothing but high marks for the NX series.

the thing I love most about the NX series is the dual-memory slots. i can listen to music on my 1 GB CompactFlash card (with PocketTunes and MCA of course) while reading an e-Book off my 512MB MemoryStick PRO, all while chilling at a local cafe to my school. when i want to surf the net, i just pop out the memory card and insert wifi card and I am online within 90 seconds.

i really can't see anything else out there on the horizon in the PDA market that intrigues me. i'll just use this one until it does out, and probably be forced (cringe) to make the switch to PPC

just my 2 cents

one thing that I always wanted in a PDA was to upp all the video that I download from online whether it be Manga, music videos, whole movies etcetc.

With such power software like Kinoma, IC 1.5, MMplayer etcetc. it's more possible than ever. And since CF cards are cheaper than MS sticks, I can go wild with them now! (2gb sticks = 4-10 movies *depending on quality and length of course*) The other day I was watching "The Last Samurai" on my NX80 in the subway and I totally got looks from everyone on the train wanting to know how such a small thing had such great looking quality flicks. :)

Then again...maybe they wanted to mug me and take it for themselves?...ACK ACK!!

I had an NX60 from February of '04 to July of '04. Then came the day when I was just messing around looking for something new, and I stumbled accross a brand new NX80V on ubid.com for $280. I was starting to have issues with not enough memory, so I thought what the heck, that extra memory is gonna do wonders for me. Now I can actually load mapopolis maps without the thing having a fit.

As far as the NX series goes, there is no better PDA in the market in my opinion. It would be nice if it had built in BT though.

Well I've had an NR70V (MS slot died), NX70V and now added an NX80V so that should speak for itself. I don't go anywhere without the NX80 these days. The camera comes in handy, music is always available, and I have now converted about 120 DVDs to sony format. I'm a real movie buff and I watch movies when I travel. Even though I have a laptop the NX80 is so much more convienient than the laptop for watching movies.

You can't beat these NX series PDAs. For me the clamshell design is prefered, the built in keyboard is a major item for me (I don't use grafitti), the NX80 battery life and awsome screen are hard to beat.

For my money a perfect PDA would be a combination of the best features of the NX70 and NX80.
NX70
o Non-retractable CF slot - doesn't break
o Keyboard - better tactile response
o power switch - doesn't break, better location
o video capture - better capture rate
o slimmer lighter design - easier to hold

NX80
o bright screen - useful at minimum brightness
o longer battery life - watch 2 hour movie on one charge
o better camera - printable photos
o extra internal memory - just the right size for me
o built in CF drivers - no worry about crashes killing the CF
o MS slot on side (I have less trouble with it popping out)
o Audio record button
o 4 screen mounted app buttons
o lighted keys
o Back key - larger and easier to use
o light - useless as a photo aid but useful as a flashlight

120 DVD's in Sony format?! Any chance of you sparing the rest of us the trouble of converting some of those?

I agree with you, the NX is outstanding. Add some integrated WiFi to your list and you got a heavenly PDA.

I have an NX73v european version. it is one of te most usefull things I own.
it is my diary, my contact book, my alarm clock, my mp3 player (personal and in the car), it can email my pictures when my laptop lets me down, it is my in car GPS sat nav (mapsonic), it is my webcam, it is my companion.
Although now Sony has f***** up and decided not to make any more and especially not to make any more that can use compact flash, if my NX73v ever dies (which it is bound to do... not even Sony make things to last forever)
my only option will one day be to walk down that slippery road to PPC'ville.

I totally agree with most of the posts. I have an European NX73V (since December 2003) which does all things that I need:
1. Agenda, contacts, e-mails, sms (all with Agendus).
2. Internet, use my WL100 at home or at the pub.
3. mp3 with my 512 Mb CF card. I even use the NX73V together with the PEGA-SPC100 cradle as music player during the social events at work(drinking...) .
4. Take my MS Pro from my Cybershot DSC-P150 and use Resco Viewer for a nice slide show of my two daughters.
5. Remote control (RMC and Novii).
6. Games, bejeweled, zap2000 etc.
7. I sometimes like to use the keyboard.
8. Bluejacking at the airport....
9. Wake up call.
10. In Mapopolis I use the map of my beloved Utrecht in the Netherlands

etc, etc,

At this timepoint I see no real replacement. I still hope Sony will make a new nice (Palm) PDA, somewhere at the end of 2005.... :D

Yeah, but not only will none of the progrmas on Palm OS work, but the OS is unstable as hell, can't find almost any free software, and you have to actually end task on any program that's open that you want to close. You won't find me going to the PPC OS. I'd rather just get an M100 {If they can still be had ;)}

I started with a Handspring Visor when everyone else around me was getting a Palm 3 or Palm Vx. Iloved the Visor and still have it. Then upgraded to a Clie N760 and I was hooked on Clie's. Living in HK at the time I was able to tap into the large aftermarket accessory market for the device though I did get a Vaja case for it (got a Vaja case for my Handspring also)

Later upgraded to a NX60 (and also a Vaja case) and picked up a BT stick for it as well as installed Pelaca's drivers for the CF card - very useful

Finally seeing Sony was getting out the PDA market picked up a NX80V off UBID as a backup and also a WL100 card. Couldn't get a Vaja case for that one since they are not made so instead bought a Bellagio case. As an aside the Bellagio is well made but the clip is not as rigid as the ultraclip on the Vaja. Also neither case can take the WL100 so I need to carry that separately.

I use my NX60 all the time. As an organiser (sync'ed to my corporate Groupwise system so I know where I need to be over the day!), e-mail (use Eudora and connect either via BT via my cellphone or via the WL100 if I am near a hotspot), listening to music etc.

I have never been that satisfied with video though. The picture quality is poor IMHO and a bit dark. This is on my NX60 - perhaps the NX80V might be better but haven't had time to try yet

Doesn't the NX70V have a smaller res camera than the NX80V? 1.3mp is quite useful for those quick snaps and certainly better than most of the camera phones around the place

NX70V does have smaller res camera and yes, 1.3 Mp is a whole lot better than most camera phones.

For pictures I use a camera. One of those small sony ones. ^_^

As far as I know, there is still nothing better on the market.

I need a built-in keyboard. That narrows down the field to the NX73/80/UX. The UX is too slow and has a smaller screen. The 73 and 80 have Graffiti 2. That leaves the NX70 and 60.

Yeah, but it's a realtively easy procedure to load the old Graffitti on an NX73/80 (whether that is legal is another issue that I will not delve into at this juncture)

Mas

hey Pruss, if you have an older graffiti 1 machine then check these forums on how to transfer graffiti 1 over to the 73 and 80. All you need is a freeware program like "Filez" which allows access to the files in the system and transport them.

I had a NR70 before so it was easy. I even copied the graffiti 1 files to my PC in case I ever had a crash and lost graffiti 1 totally on my NX80.

Well it's been awhile but I'm back. When Sony announced they were not selling Clie's in the US I panicked and bought a T3 and sold my NX-80. Big mistake!! I used the T3 for about 6 months and hated it. I just sold the T3 and found myself a brand new NX80 on ebay. Oh it's even better than I remember. I'll keep this one until it's broken and if a similar PDa isnt available at that time I'll turn to Ebay or Japan to find a new Clie'.

My two year old NX70 is not what I expected. Sure it has a great screen. Nice gadgets, BUT it is bulky, heavy, poor battery life(only 2-3hours, when using Lightspeed to underclock and screen all dimmed) and the plastics have lost their paint- not to talk about the silver painting on the magnesium casing. I spent a lot, nearly the full Sony price and I am not satisfied.
Sure watching movies is fine. I've seen manys on the train. And all my accessories like keyboard or Batt-pack are really pushing it, but in the end it is only a Palm, nothing more. My Handspring just suited me fine. Then I bought a Laptop- sold it for a Sony and now, I have a laptop again. I can not swap a Laptop for a Palm. But switched back to a Palm m500, because of battery life (against my Sony) to supplent my Laptop. I think my next will be a PPC if Palm does not make a better series than the current T-Models. Sorry, just my impression.

I was using my NX70 for a year untill last year it stoped working. Went out and bought a ux50 and have been using it for a year. today i dug out my old NX70 and as from a miracle it strated working again. (the touch screen stoped working about a year ago). I am going to use it from now on. Bigger screen, more battery life. remote control.. etc. I love it.

NX70 Is by far one of the better products I have used. Had left it outside in below freesing temps. Dropped it several times. Complained about the OS version and limitations. But I still use is more often than any other product. I normally have it connected to GPS reciever with a Cell Phone mount on the dash and it's my navagator when I travel the USA. Saved my bacon when I was stuck in a interstate closure and had to run back roads for 40 miles. It's the color screen and easy backup and recovery. One year and still ticking.

I really liked my NX70 for the first few months, but as I added more third-party software I became acutely aware of the dearth of RAM on the NX and the size of the unit with a Covertec leather case on it. I have a wifi card for it, but surfing the web on a handheld is not that much fun. I purchased a T3 and have been very happy with its extra RAM, its small size, and its ability to switch to landscape view.

I still use the NX as an ereader. The scroll wheel makes reading and bookmarking a breeze. (As an aside - I am the only person I know who actually likes reading on a pda. Obviously there are others out there, but who are you?)

I used the NX80 for about 1.5 years then scaled back to TE because my GF wanted to trade. That's when I started to appreciate many of the finer points of the NX series. On the whole, I am very happy with the NX80.

The only problems with the NX80 is that if you need connectivity, the NX80 is a bit cumbersome for that and the PPC is quite better in this area. However, if you only use it for PIM and multimedia you should be happy because no other units come close to that even though 2 years have passed since its introduction.

Also, another problem with the NX is that there are quite a few parts which are prone to damage. Even the thick hinge and the camera on my NX80 have begun to show signs of malfunctions, not to mention the power button and the power plug.

Just to keep this thread ticking. I have owned my European NX73V since October 2003. It has been rock steady the whole time and I use it every day without fail. Not had to repair it yet or replace the battery. Best features for me:

Excellent battery life - I tend to keep it in it's cradle at home and charge it with a USB cable at work.
MP3 player - pocket tunes deluxe and a 512MB SanDisk MemoryStick - use WMA files rather than MP3s for better compression and better quality.
PIM - Agendus Pro is awesome for calendar, address book, memos, todo lists etc..
Email - I still use Clie Mail every day and send/receive via hotsync. I have a 2 hour commute and sit on the train using the built in mini keyboard to keep in touch with friends.
Photo album - CF memory card slot to view and store pictures taken with my digital camera
BUILT-IN BLUETOOTH! - This is where the '73V beats the NX70. I can hook this upto my Motorola V3 RAZR and use it for SMS and browsing/email via GPRS. In addition I tend to swap pictures and address book entries with friends' PDAs and mobiles. Awesome tool.
Built-in camera - great for taking quick photos and videos to show friends. Videos can be saved as quicktime files.
Install as many applications as you want onto the MemoryStick!
Games - currently playing Zuma, Bejewelled, Galaxians and Billiards.
Bible - I'm using the excellent software at www.olivetree.com There is one bible reader application and you can add in as many different versions as you need. Plus concordance references and original greek/hebrew translations. All of which can be stored on your memorystick!
ebooks - ereader is great for those long train journeys. All major authors are represented here.
RSS newsreader - I download the bbc news via hotsync every morning before I leave for work. Saves me needing to buy a newspaper.
The SCREEN - Bright, Big, Beautiful!
Voice Recorder - I use this to take down quick recordings when I'm writing songs on guitar/piano
Remote Control - infra-red remote control for any device! Noviiremote rules.
Watching Movies - Full DivX movie support (if only I could afford a 1GB card...)
Dictionary
Adobe Acrobat Reader for Palm OS... top tool!

Nothing has convinced me to change yet. As most people here have said. In 2-3 years since Sony released these flagship PDAs, nobody has managed to better them.

Considering the number of uses I have for my 73V, it is certainly not "bulky".

Yes, I'm happy with my Clie. :D

I don't know how long I've had my NX80, but there is STILL not another PDA that has the most important features that I love: Clamshell/swivel, big screen and keyboard. With that said there are a lot of other features I really wish I had, like built-in BT and WiFi. But unless i get the other big three as well then I'm not switching.

On a side note, I've recently gotten a super-mini laptop which has taken duty of some of the more "hard core" applications like email, web browsing and data entry. Since I have that now there's no reason I couldn't switch to a slimmer, less capable Palm.
