I'm getting a LinkSys 54G Router with fitting PC Card for my laptop. Now I heard that with current firmware, the WL100 of my NX should work fine with that router.

But what about the contact between the Laptop with the 54G PC card and the WL100. Do they work allow a peer-to-peer connection?

And: What else is possible besides just exchanging files that way?

My laptop is on the corporate LAN. Would it be possible to use the WL100 with the PC Card in the laptop to...
> hotsync
> access the web via the laptop
> access the LAN with the Clié via the laptop

Hope the description was understandable.

Please remember that the 54G has to run only in single 802.11b mode in order for it to work with the Clie!

You can only exchange files in RAM on the Clie.

HotSync = yes

Web access, it all depends if your laptop has a dial-up or a wired Ethernet connection.

Same thing, your laptop would have to have a wired Ethernet connection.

You really need to use the 54G WAP base station for both laptop and Clie access, but you didn't state who your ISP is and how you connect to the internet.

You may also have to create multiple profiles and need extra software if you don't have Windows XP. Most of what you want to do might be possible, but it will take some work, network understanding, and maybe some additional hardware to pull it all off.

thanks for your feedback; will let you know my exact setup later on and maybe describe a bitte more on detail what i would be glad to achieve with the wifi-stuff

ok, seems this thread is only between us to n2ifp, so i will try to get into details:

my setup at home:
linksys 54g-dsl-router on dsl-model
desktop pc with xp and linksys 802.11b pci card
nx70 with sony wl100-card
office-laptop with win2000 and linksys 54g-pc-card

my setup at work
the same office-laptop but this time hooked via docking station to our corporate lan so the pc-card slot stays free for my wireless card

===

ok, so as i had problems with the router i exchanged it and will install it this evening (european time ;-)

===

what i want to do is the following:

at home:
access the internet with my clié over the router; this should be no problem once i have updated the firmware as suggested. is it possible to select just "b"-mode? because what i have in mind is that there are only two options "just g" or "mixed = going down to b, if necessary"; in that case i might need to select mixed, I guess. i think that will be sufficient for home. i do currently only sync sith my office pc; whereas being able to get a peer to peer connection with the desktop would be nice, but only if i can use this for transfering files on/from the memory stick.

at work:
now here might the "fun" start or not; what i would like to do in the office is
1) hotsyincing
2) accessing the net
3) send/receive mails

from all i know all of that will only be possible once I am able to get a conncection between the wl100 and my laptop's g-card; now that one for sure has only the options "only g" or "mixed" for peer-to-peer via ad-hoc mode; i was not able to connect yet though; i may install the linksys updated drivers from their website, but their is no updated firmware!

the interesting thing might be the online access via the office laptop; as mentioned there is no dial-up necessary as the pc is constantly online via lan; the office-laptop does not have a fixed ip though.

hope that explains it a little more in detail. any suggestions are greatly appreciated. thanks in advance.

You can't have peer to peer if your using a router at the same time. Going through the router will require infrastructure mode.

You will only be able to run single mode b, no mixed mode.

I have no clue if the WL100 will work directly with 54G PC Card in adhoc mode. Remember standards still have not been finalized for the 54G.

Who is your DSL provider? If it's AOL, forget it!

I am NOT Windows 2000 experienced, even though I did get my brother's work laptop to work with our net, the cable modem makes life a whole lot easier.

The 54G PC card will have to be bridged or use some form of ICS in the laptop. At work, you will have to switch the clie and laptop to adhoc mode,  provided the WL100 can talk to the 54G card. This is where you should start first, before you go any further.

Currently, transferring files to/from memory stick is not possible. I am not an engineer nor a network expert. I try to help with what I can.

I will have to search back through some threads on DSL connections to refresh my memory. I reserve the right to modify this post at anytime :)!
