View Full Version : Pissed at my NZ's battery!!

Up until today, my battery has been more or less ok. I've taken lots of shots and been relatively ok with the battery life. Last night, I drained the battery almost down completely (mem stick not available) and let it charge all night.

Today, my camera is acting very odd. I took a handful of shots w/ the flash and then it was teling me there wasn't enough battery to use the flash anymore. I let it "re-think" its battery life, and exited the camera app. In the launcher, the clie said I had 80% battery life, when i went back to the camera, it said I had 30% and could not use the flash. I did a reset and let it stay off for a while and still no dice.

I went home and re-charged it and tonight I was able to take about 10 shots w/ the flash before it started up doing THE SAME THING.

The Launcher saus I have 75% left but when I launch the camera app, it says I have 30%. I let it wait a bit for the battery to "catch up" but it still says 30%.

Very bummed, will try to reset or drain and recharge.

It can't deliver the amperage now for some reason, especially if you use flash. That draws the most current when recharging. I still believe deep discharging one's battery is not conducive to good battery life.

See thats what i think also. It was after I did a deep discharge (unintentionally) that it started to behave oddly.

Someone earlier posted a highly technical explanation of the NZ's battery and they warned of discharging it too deeply. I only did two "deep" discharges and ran out of patience at 5% each time.
How deep did you go? I hope it fixes itself. I gave myself a scare last week. After pluggin it into my cig lighter in my truck with my GPS connector cord the battery quit displayin time information. It recovered after it fully recharged on the cradle. I did not relish having to buy a new battery to replace it (though I'm glad that's an option)!!! Maybe a coupla good charge cycles will fix it!!:)

How many people are having problems with the NZ battery, has anyone done a poll??? Seems like that most of the discussion around here.....something always suffers when you intergrate to much into one device.

Lots of discussion, but it seems to be a vocal minority. Mine is fine and it keeps gaining "runtime" with each cycle...

battery fine... deep discharge wears it out faster, yes the camera uses a lot..... yawn....

I seems odd to use the phrase "deep discharge" when you really mean "using the battery." Yes, a lot of batteries lose cycles when you bleed them dry and then recharge often, but...and this is taking only from Rosenkrantz's tale of woe...it seems to be a bit ridiculous to have a rechargeable battery that loses significant uptime from one "deep discharge." It's the equivelent of a car that starts getting 1/2 the gas mileage after running the tank to fumes before refilling once.

no, I do mean deep discharge.... I have no misunderstanding...

Sorry it seems ridiculous, but this is the characteristic of a lithium polymer (and lithium ion) cell...

nicads are good for deep discharge, and so are gel cells, and other lead acid batteries, which includes car batteries...

In this world, you rarely get something for nothing...

You get light weight, small size, and great energy density from lithium technology.

You also get extreme sensitivity to overcharging, deep discharging, and pay a lot for them...

Lithium batteries will give you more watt-hours in their lifetime if you never discharge them below 1/2 capacity as opposed to "fully" discharging them (which you can never do since the unit will turn off before it is really 0, which will really kill the battery)...

If you dispute or do not believe this information, please visit the web sites of the battery manufacturers and you will see for yourself. This is fact.
