Any suggestions on transferring data and apps from a TH55U to a TH55E? Can I just do a restore from a TH55U MS Backup to the TH55E or is it more complicated than that?

I'm pretty sure you could do that, and I would do it if I were you.
If I ever ended up getting a TH55/U, I wouldn't do it the other direction (E -> U) though because I wouldn't want all the bluetooth files copied over to a bluetoothless <laugh> TH55.
The E has everything the U does... PLUS extra language support and Bluetooth!

The only question is whether it will allow you to do it.

BackupMan kicks MSBackup's trash though.

I guess that brings me to my next question. Is the software that controls bluetooth loaded in RAM or ROM?

Hi, I had a similar dilemma when I upgraded from my UX40 to UX50. I had all my backups done by Backupman and all I did was insert the memory stick to my new UX50. Although it seemed all worked fine. I did found a lot of conflict on a few programs that I use. So I ended up performing a hard reset anyway and just start from the beginning. You may try it, but personally, I would not do it again just to avaoid the problems I had before.

You might get some TH55U system data bases on your new TH55E which might mess it up. But trying canīt hurt...too much:-)
So I would make a backup of that data, by zipping your user-folder (the one on the PC/Mac in the palmdesktop folder). Then do a hotsync with the new TH55E (hard reset if there is already a user installed)
Then check out all features. If everything works, BT, WLan, virtual graffiti....you can be happy if not:

1. Hard reset the new device
2. delete all files in the backup and archive folders
3. hotsync
4. check out if it works now.
5. reinstall your applications and database, but nothing that is called sys... or any prefs... connected to the sys.

This worked when I switched from N77C/E to TH55. When I just hotsynced the new device, the status bar at the bottom did not work anymore. So I went through a lot of deinstallation and reinstallation processes until I found out that some old prefs were corrupting my new device. So you might have to go through the pains of reinstalling all your third party apps, but then at least your new device will work as it should.

Good luck!

All hardware related software should be in ROM. There is a BtExgLibDB.pdb in my backup folder. I cannot check it on my device, since its at sony support to get the voice recorder / microphone repaired:-((

I guess that brings me to my next question. Is the software that controls bluetooth loaded in RAM or ROM?It is in ROM, however... many settings are saved in RAM (most files that start with Bt).

Also, on my old TG50, I had a bluetooth update I installed in RAM, so it took precedence over the files in ROM.

I would imagine you should have no problems going to an E from a U, but there's always the long way.
