Also given SONY'S American and European customer bashing stance ( gee, get the feeling I have a love/hate relationship with SONY )

I have GREAT doubts it will ever see American sales, like many other additional cool SONY NX/NZ add-ons like GPS, modems, cell phone cards ad nausea tem ......

SONY simply sucks in this capacity

Wake me up when it has cable!! Who watches over-the-air TV anymore? This really sounds like a show-off gadget that doesn't have many applications.

Yea, can you imagine dragging the cable line around with your clie? "Ultra-portable with 500 ft. cable extension kit." HA!

you don't have to drag the cable around behind you, just get the optional satellite dish backpack with built in receiver and decoder

I still watch broadcast TV...don't have much time for anything else...and the thought of being anywhere I want and catching up with the latest regarding the potential war, would be a neat concept...

I'd much rather an FM tuner memory stick though...

I'd much rather an FM tuner memory stick though... Yeah, that I would really like!! And as for my earlier post, I didn't mean that you would actually hook cable up to it as you do today. It would have to be beamed from somewhere to be feasible; with the major point being that with today's limitations, I doubt this will make a very big splash.

Are you talking about like streaming cabletv over 802.11a/g wifi or something like that? That would be a pretty cool setup.

Yes, exactly, or some future equivalent of that, such as a TV version of the way cell phones work, where no matter where you went, you'd have access wirelessly to every channel (or at least channels that you subscribed to). Then I would think you'd see mobile TV access take off, whereas now there's such a discrepancy in quality and availability between wired and wireless.

I think that the tuner even without cable stations is a huge leap forward. I agree that not many people stick to broadcast tv anymore, but if they can do it, how long before cable is an option? How about a pay per view service where you can order any movie you want anytime on your handheld? Would be a cool way to pass the time.

All in all, I agree that I'd rather have an FM tuner than a TV tuner right now.

Yup, an FM tuner would be very cool, and practical.

for all those asking for fm this would do the samething i have i portable tv and i can get about 15 fm stations on it, each one with its own chanel(just snow on the screen) so this tv tuner would surve as a radio too...at least here in nyc

ps there 15 of the most popular stations

The link worked fine for me...

Check it out...

At the bottom of the article it say Sony Spokesperson said they had no plans to develope and that what we see is a Mock-Up...

If you go around the net and also read a few more articles. You'll find that the TV memory stick was a mock up that Sony did for the CEBIT show. They are saying that they really don't have plans to make a real one.

Its to bad, it would have been a cool gadget.

Their is some talk about a future clie may have the new TV turner chip that sony is building in it, but the we will really see a high price for a clie, far more than the 799.99 for the NZ.

Broadcast tv would be awesome on a clie. Think about it. Its 5pm and you're waiting for the bus. Why not whip out the clie +TV Tuner and watch some news or the simpsons? How cool would that be!!!

I can see this coming from our future generation cell phone networks. We are already moving towards video chat ability in handheld phones. I could see a day when you put a SIM card in your TV and pic up TV channels over the cell phone network.

There is a product called VideoLAN which allows streaming of audio/video files to different OS clients.

http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

They don't have a PalmOS version, but going along the same line, i have heard something about RealOne creating a player for Palm ? Is that true ?

P.S. I'm going to email these guys to see if they are planning anything for the PalmOS system :)

The TV tuner memory stick would be very cool but they will not actually make it because they will probably release a Clie with a built in TV tuner and a $1000 price tag. More $$$ for Sony.

dks99 -

Realplayer already has a player for Palm...however, it is for the PalmOS5 audio API - meaning that since Sony did their audio their way (much better, IMO...) the audio players for the T|T don't work...

with all the complaints read in various posts here about the NZ's battery.... I shudder to think... about them putting out a TV Card which would suck the life of the battery even more for those people who are already complaining

I'll stick to my tin-foil hat.... with rabbit-ears coming out of it... plugged into my AV adapter in the NZ Cradle.... LOL
