My UX50 crashed today - it seems to have lost my application settings (e.g. email account settings in Versamail), network settings, ZLauncher shell, etc. I don't have a Powersave backup, so I tried a Hotsync with "Desktop Overwrites Handheld" for the "System" item, but it didn't get back any of my settings, or my ZLauncher shell. Applications, address book, etc seem to have been restored OK.

Can anyone advise me how I can get a "full" restore from my PC backup?

TIA for any help.
Ian

The "HotSync restore trick" works only for the data shared between the desktop and the Palm device. Data shared with Palm Desktop, and sometimes installed applets which leave a conduit connection will be updated. Data (generally settings and such) that is specific to the Palm device is not HotSync'd to the desktop so it is not available to HotSync back.

Lacking a PowerSave backup, you've most certainly lost the Palm devices settings. You can't restore data that wasn't backed-up in advance.

1. Read the multitudes of threads here on "back-ups" and back-up strategies.

2. Buy Backupman.

3. Backup your unit to your Memorystick using Backupman.

4. Copy Memorystick to PC as often as is convenient for you (re: hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, annually, every 4 years after an election, etc; )

5. Remove this problem forever from your list of "issues."

Paranoid old me adds a step 4a to Smeggies list:

4a: Backup the PC copy of all your Palm Devices "stuff" (all MS copies, the Int.Media copy, and the HotSync folder that uses the HotSync name) to CD.

I don't trust the PC data reliablility any more (actually I trust is less) than my Clie.
