I'd buy one, or DIY if I knew specifically what parts were needed, and especially where to get the batteries.

I dont know what parts are needed or where to by them. I only know what features it has. there is a LED to indicate whether the Li battery is run out. the switch beside the LED could be used to choose whether to charge the ux50 or Li battery.
i bet someone could figure out what parts are needed from the 4th picture.

Do you know where he got the battery(ies). It looks like two side by side in the photos.

For that kinda size i think i'll have todo a AA battery setup, i always like the idea of being able to pickup just about anywhere those batterys

Does anyone know where you can get that little rectangular plug that goes between the power supply and the cradle? I could like with a AAAA 4 pack holder from Radioshack with a cord that goes into the dock. I just want portable recharging that I can use while in my briefcase or backpack.
Another option is a Li-Ion battery pack from my laptop to the connector.

There are also some third-party cradles that feature a mini usb jack.

This mod really makes for a thick PDA :)

I'd love to see somebody make this in a self-contained package that could connect via a short cable to the docking station, allowing recharging of the PDA without the need for a nearby power supply or a laptop for USB recharging...

Easiest way:
1) Brando charging case w/ min usb connector
2) Ziplinq (or similar) min usb to usb connector
Now you can optionally buy the Ziplinq or similar cig adapter and wall adapters that have the USB connections on them
3) Radioshack holder (don't remember the part number) for 4AA batteries
4) USB female connector
5) 4 AA Li-Ion recharge-ables
Wire the USB power wires (don't remeber off the top of my head)
Charge AAs
Place batteries in battery case
Now you have a very flexible power configuration in a small package - you can charge/power from
-cig adapter
-wall
-usb connector
-battery pack

Yikes. (Looks like a post from the McGuiver forum) That badboy may be functional, but lets be honest, it's ugly. If someone would go to that length for more battery time, I suggest biting the bullet and spend the money to buy the EB40. Its more elegant, functional, and yes, expensive.

Has anyone got any idea what parts contained in this cradle? I love the idea of Hippo's mod but I'm just too damn scared to open my UX...

i bet someone could figure out what parts are needed from the 4th picture.
At a guess, the 14-pin DIL is an optoisolator bank, the leftmost pcb is a charge-pumped voltage convertor, and the central pcb the actual lipolymer charge circuit. Do I win the cuddly toy? :)

Only if you can figure out the specifics :D

Qucker to just redesign from an existing circuit. I have some schematics floating around somewhere, and a stash of 1100mAH cells. ;)

Fantastic - please let me know if you can come up with some workable - I cannot afford an EB40!

something i was wondering. i have a third party cradle made for a car charger/wall charger combo. i don't have any documentation for any of it as i bought it all used--but i noticed it charges up very well using the charger cable from a motorola razr cell phone... now my question is: could an extended battery be made with one of those phone chargers that runs off of a 9-volt battery (similar to those disposable ones but made to give a full recharge) and the ux50 car cradle?.. it's just a hypothetical question. im not looking for an answer but it's just something to think about.

I have just bitten the bullet and modded the UX USB adaptor so that it charges the internal battery too. Fortunately it was easier than I expected and I found that I only had to solder one end of the wire - the other can be firmly wedged in the USB socket so that a connection is made when connected to my HotSync cable.
In fact, so self-confident am I, that I have already begun work on my JC40 to turn it into an EB40 as per Hippo's instructions! ;)
