UPDATE (Nov 18): NO IT DIDN'T!!! (http://www.1src.com/forums/showthread.php?p=747635#post747635)

--------------------------------------

I have an NX-70V.
It's my first PDA, and I've had it for around a month or two.
I bought it for $80 CDN on clearance at Staples here in Canada.

Ok, so i was walking around yesterday and my Clie was living comfortably in my pocket. At one point, I pull it out to write something down and I can't turn it on. ... nothing.... The LED on the power button won't even blink, and the screen remains a depressing black. I tried a soft reset and a hard reset - zip, zilch, nada. No, the reset switch is not engaged. (I tried playing with that a bit and hitting the power button every way I could think) I thought the power button might be deaqd so I sat it on the charging cradle. The charging LED on the power button does turn on but goes away after maybe 5 minutes, and my baby still won't turn on.

I've been really careful with it. The only time I have EVER dropped it was out of my pocket from a bar stool when I was drunk the other day, but it's worked flawlessly since.

I did buy the extended warranty for another $10 CDN, buit the most Staples can do for me is give me my money back. :(

I would love to get this thing fixed. Can anyone suggest anything to do or try? What might be wrong with it? Would I be able to get Sony to fix it for me? How would I go about contacting them? Would it cost me anything?
.... so many questions....

I hope someone on here will be able to help me!

Thanks in advance!!!

The battery life is only 2-3 years for the Clie NX60/70. The battery life starts from the moment the battery was made NOT how long it was used in your Clie. Maybe its just expired ? Try a new battery first
OR
Does the warranty replace to something of comparison only by money, or by product ? If the warranty gives you the choice by product maybe you can get a Palm equivalent ?
Either way look at as spending $8.50cdn a week for looking cool with a Clie.....lol

the Accu is not the problem. It do not dies from the one day to the other. Perhaps the cable is lossen? Open the battery door and look after it.
The other way would be replacing with an other Clie. Repairing at Sony is too expensive.

When you said "reset switch is not engaged" I presume you mean the HOLD switch? This switch is designed to cut off the screen mainly when the Audio player is in use.

If that is what you meant, then as suggested, your next hope is the battery. When you plugged it into the cradle and the light went out, did you try turning it on while it was still plugged in? If not, try that. If it comes on, but dies when you remove it, or shortly thereafter, its most likely the battery.

Either way, your next move would have to be replacing the battery. Go to www.cliebattery.com. They have them.

Unfortunately, if it's not the battery and you do this, you've blown some dough. Not sure what their return policy is. I haven't needed them yet.

Thanks for the replies.

Yes i did mean the hold swiitch, sorry. When I stick it in the cradle the charging LED goes on briefly, but the machine itself still wont turn on.

I would be able to return it and even the warranty back to Staples. Or, failing that, if i were to call the company that takes care of Staples' extended warranty, they would probably just send me a cheque for the $80 i paid. Either way i would still be CLIE-less. :(

I've grown to love...um...her, so I'd prefer not to lose her if possible. There flat out isn't another PDA I can buy new for that price that's even nearly as good as this one.

Would sony do any repairs for free if the unit is under warranty with them? I presume it still would be.

I will pull out the battery and check the connection. A friend of mine has the same model so i'll try his battery too. If that doesn't work, maybe I'll call the warranty people and see if they'll send me a new PDA or something. Otherwise I dont really have any choice but to return it. ...and cry....

Thanks again for the help, if you have any more ideas, please let me know.

I see the sharks are out !! (RE: laa90B2)
Hang on to it till you have exhusted all your options. Obviously stay away from any repair store that fixes computers and claims they might help (99% of the time they know 'nothing' about handhelds) but will certainly take your money to look at it.

**Does your warranty cover repair, if so send it away to get fixed rather than getting $80cdn back , you cannot even get a Mp3 player for that price !!**

Did you search the internet to see if you can send away for a free estimate on repairing whatever the problem is.
If it seems that it would be too costly to fix, compared to buying a new one (as in Ebay or an equal product ?) then sell it.
I've bought stuff on the honour system. I pay first and they send me the product and had great sucsess. Make sure you get paid first !!
Update us on what happened
Goodluck !

I'm not in much of a writing mood so i'll keep it short for now.

I was getting ready to send it away for repair (more detals on that ordeal later maybe) and I tried plugging it in and turning it on again and lo and behold it worked!!! Batt was dead but it worked fine. (seems my hard resets registered too)

Thanks Sunnbuzz for your reply ;)

I've got a post in here about wanting an LCD. It seems those are VERY costly, and I've since moved to the _very_ dark side. (thank you linus torvolds) Anyhow, I've got all the stuff that came with my Clie 70, plus extras, save the glass, and no longer want it. It seems that replacing the glass is more expensive than just ... moving on.
Does anybody want: The broken Clie - Everything is in mint condition, except the glass, which is broken, and the chrome finish on the camera wheel. I'm sure the battery is worth quite a bit, as it goes more than a week of PIM use without charge; a 128MB MS Pro; docking station; charging 'stuff'? earbuds+control (will have to search boxes, but have NEVER been used); Original installCD. -- Note- I will reset the PDA to erase contact and private info before shipping.
Please look up all my previous posts on this forum and it's predecessor to see what I'm up to. If you are interested in part or all, please PM me. Eventually, I'll round up all the parts and Ebay it all out.

Oh.. About the install CD. I suppose I could copy it to my server, so anyone in need of the NX70V CD would have a resource. But anyone needing the link would need to PM me to find said link (if it existed, which it might not) But the PMs might not be answered quickly as I migrate from PalmOS to LinuxPDA.

Is the hold button (the little slider switch) on the left hand side of the keyboard part slid up? If the switch is up, the unit will so NOTHING.
Hope this helps (I was set right after I got my nx60)
