View Full Version : WiFi Sniffer?
Anyone know where to find a WiFi sniffer app, which can be used to sniff out available WAN's...?

www.netstumbler.com for winblows
airsnort for Linux and BSD
and of course you don't need wepcrack as you are only looking for hotspots..
there are open source sniffers for the PalmOS, but unless you can compile, forget it.
Without a Yagi, or Parabolic Mesh antenna(or pringle cans) you won't pick up hot spots with sony wifi, i think it is only 30mw with no external antenna jack for a pigtail..
But you might want to give google a shot before posting a ? that is available inlarge nummbers on the net....

Create an all auto profile and it will connect to any nearby WLAN that is open. Have done so myself...
Use the search feature. There are several threads about a Palm based program that "sniffs" someone found...

Hmm, define distance to glue to a nearby WLAN: How about 15-20m with interference..........

I agree with oneeyesquare and is basically your only choice.

I could not get my wifi to work with WEP on so I turned it off on my home system. Last night I reinstalled XP, for fun, and the Linksys wireless card software installed a utility that shows wifi networks that it can connect to. I about **** when I saw two in my neighborhood pop up. So I installed WEP for what little security it offers and for some silly but happy reason, I managed to get the NZ wifi to work also... how happy is that...

XP is not sniffing, with it's newer ip stack, all it is doing is "simple" network discovery..
If it wasn't for Gatesware there would be peace on Earth..
(Enabling WEP is near futile if somebody wants you)
Good Morning Loucifer,
Thanks for the helpful reply. guess I will have to go begging to a friend who do complile.
Yup, you have hit the nail on the head with the "gatesware"
Have a great day. No stoppies in front of cop bikes.

And I have the tools to compile ... and the knowledge to modify ... but not the time to write from scratch.

Is there anything out there yet? My laptop picks up several in the area but I would like to do it with my nx.

I thought that the reason there are no wifi sniffer is because sony won't release the API for the WL100. Is this true? Do you need to call on the hardware to make a sniffer work?

My house is all aluminum sided, so the signal doesn't go to far outside. So if anybody wants access, they'll have to sit in my driveway :)!

This is the letter I wrote to the developer listed above and the reply:
Hello,
I am a clie NX60 owner and I was wondering if you would be
supporting the Clie any time soon. If you go to the forum at cliesource.com and search for the word sniffer you will see that there is a very sizable market waiting for a sniffer application like the one you are selling.
BTW I would be willing to be a beta tester...
Thanks,
******************REPLY*****************
I have considered supporting the Clie, however Sony has provided a complete and utter lack of developer information on their products. They do not seem to care if software from 3rd party developers functions on their unit, let alone takes advantage of their constantly changing always poorly documented system.
I'm sorry to sound so negative, but it comes from trying tosupport so many inconsistent Sony devices without so much as a word of reply from their developer support.
In short, I would love to support as many devices as possible, and perhaps someday Sony will change their policies, but until then there will be no Sony WiFi support.
Sorry....
This totally sucks I would really like a portable wifi device for sniffing....

Thanks to Sony, we all suffer from lack of goodies for the Clie :(

maybe this calls for a petition

Just in case..
Just in case you meant petition, I'll sign/second that one. If you meant Sony should be in perdition... well... that's probably true too, but they still have a good handheld in the NZ.

My house is aluminium sided too but I can see my network about 200 feet away. Not with a Clie though, iPaq with a Oronoco Gold card, using netstumbler.
