1. Have you tried a soft reset? If not I would try this first, it can really help.
2. Is the hotsync icon in the taskbar in the lower left corner? If not go to your start bar and under programs/palm desktop and click on the hotsync manager.
3. Try using the PalmOne Hotsync troubleshooting guide:
http://kb.palmone.com/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBCGI.EXE/,/?St=204,E=0000000000087232824,K=2501,Sxi=5,useTemplate=Case.tem,CASE=2630
I'm not sure whether you have the Palm desktop software on the CD, but you can download the latest version which might help, you can get it from here:

Good luck! ;)

I would write to PalmOne Tech Support at this point if I were you. Since you have a specific error code it probably will be easy for them to figure it out.
Good Luck ;)

I've had the same problem happen to me this week. I was quite worried. I tried doing what WINDOWS XP told me to do... I got lost and further frustrated. I figured I would just download the driver again from the CD... I put the CD in but since my desktop was already there it wouldn't boot up. No problem I thought... just go in through "My Computer" and double click on the driver... no luck there because I couldn't figure out what program to open it up with, let alone where I should put it.... the slow burn I had going was turning into a full blown forest fire !!!
I unhooked all my USB cables turned the computer on and off I then hooked up the cables again . XP learned identified them again, and again the PALM HOTSYNC wire gave me a message it wasn't working.
Ready to throw out the computer and my PEELING ZIRE 72. I just went ahead and tapped the "STAR" icon on the Zire. and bingo... the hotsync went through and the icon stating I had a problem went away....
I figure the problem all started when I tried to connect the palm to the wire in dim light and it did not make a complete connection and when I went to do the original hotsync and the computer and the Zire couldn't communicate with one another the WINDOWS operating system took over and said the HOTSYNC USB cable is the problem.
so the now you know the long of it.
the short of it... even if its saying there is a problem, go ahead and try tapping the silkscreen "STAR" hotsync button.
good luck.
I wish Palm had the foresight to allow users to re load only certain drivers again. I loved my CLIE... its installation disk was much more user friendly.
