Just got off the phone with customer service escalation regarding that my z72 advance exchange has taken over a month
This is what i was told that all z72 are on back order and the reason is that the cassing is being redesigned to prevent future peeling, they didnt confirm if it was going to use the blue rubbery paint or a palstic color housing. they said that all units including already shipped and not shipped will be upgraded to this new housing tha aprox ship date is nov 12. luckily i bought a new TC at a very good price of 300 bucks new to tie me over

Thanks for the news. I can't wait to see what the new cases are like because my 72 is peeling badly. I don't plan on sending mine in until I hear back that the new cases truely solve the problem without creating other problems.
Did PalmOne pay for your advance exchange replacement? Also, are you saying they didn't ship out a temporary replacement to you still, until they can put the new cases on? That would not be very good customer service.

Thanks for the info. Now I just have to decide if I'm going to go through the hassle of getting it replaced - generally, it works fine, and I don't want to be without it.

I agree -- the paint's not enough to soend a few days waiting for a replacement. I'm wondering about stripping off what paint is still on my 72 because of the reports of people doing it successfully. Two questions though:
1) Would that affect the warranty? Anyone have experience with sending back a stripped Zire?
2) What do they look like w/o the paint? People who've done it seem to like the look but I have yet to find an online photo? Anyone have a photo they can share of a bare metal Z72?

Try here (http://discussion.brighthand.com/palmhandhelds/showthread.php?threadid=67912&highlight=naked).
If you don't want to wait for palmOne to replace it, I recommend stripping it: it solves the problem and looks a lot better.

Frioman,
Can you take a picture of the new paint color?

I had the same problem with my Zire 72. It took them from October 25th to December 6th to fix the paint because of the new casing technique they are using. The blue paint is different. It is darker, borderlined indigo. It sill shines like the old blue, but doesn't feel as rubbery and instead feels slick and smooth. The paint is a lot tougher than the old one. The only complaint I have is that they took so long on my repair. The lady told me 7 days and it took two months. I didn't even get a replacement to use for the two months either. It is just poor customer service. Anyway, they should be repairing faster now that they have the new casing/paint technique. If you like blue, then it is worth it. If not, I say strip it because silver looks great too.

Can someone take a couple pictures of the new finish?
I'm sure it would help those of us who are sitting on the fence.
Thanks :D

I have more about naked Zires in my Blog-find it at http://tamspalm.blogspot.com/2004/11/zire-72s-or-how-to-make-product-flaw.html.
I was at a store in Austria today, and their Zire 72 was stripped down too. They only had a bit of paint left at the top of the unit.. . However, the unit looked nice!
BTW, don't use any sharp stuff to get the color off as it may ruin the metal. Try a solvent maybe(I think that this may help, but don't really know).

I used my fingernail and it worked great. I also used a toothpick forthe recessed area arount the screen and buttons.
