View Full Version : HOW MANY MEMORY STICKS does one need?

How many memory sticks do I need? I want to carry maybe 20 pictures and possibly 100 mp3s around to play. Maybe a 2-5 short movies would be nice. Also maybe 30 documents of between 1 and 10 pages.
I am guessing this would require more than one 128MB stick. Is it better to buy another 128 stick at the prices now ($42 on eCost.com) or is there some benefit in waiting for the 256 and 512MB sticks (which will cost more per MB I believe).
Thanks

i think the mem pros will cost less per mb going up in the line(256-512 exc.) 100 mp3s will take more than 2(probobly more than 4).

I was able to fit about 30 mp3s on a 128M stick. The documents shouldn't be too much of a problem. I'm thinking a movie might take a whole stick (if it will fit).
I think that the bigger sticks are going to be pricey for a while.... so, I would pick up 1-2 of the 128s now. It isn't like they will go to waste when the bigger ones come out. You could always sell them, use them for backups, etc.

I figured with as much space as an MP3 took, a movie would be a LOT. Thanks for the info.

I'd rather have one huge memory stick that way no need to carry extra ones on me which i can possibly lose. Too bad that one memory stick (512mb) that I want is gonna cost a fortune!

Or you could be optimistic and go with a 1Gig Compact Flash when someone writes the drivers for it. I'm still hanging on to the faint hope that drivers will be produced.

Rick098,
Thanks for clarifying! LOL I have several books on mine as well. That makes sense. I was going to be flummoxed if a movie only took that much space (I had a music video on mine and it was over 800k , I believe)

Talking head vidios might take up less space than ones with more movement (just a guess).

Someone may argue that the new memory stick pros will be faster. But I have heard that they will not be any faster on the NX series due to a bottleneck in the hardware. I suppose this is true.
Maybe I will buy another MS and wait until the CF driver comes "in April"
Thanks

Sony says not to expect any increase in speed unless the device uses it natively. Any devices that need the MS driver are not native. I can only guess at the reasons, but this is what Sony says, bummer!

It all depends, but drive memory is specified as 1,000kb as 1mb.
Memory is usually specified as 1,024kb as 1mb

It has been my esteemed observation, that one needs EXACTLY one more memory stick than the number one has in his or her possession!.

Did you hear that SanDisk announced a FOUR GIG CompactFlash card? that would be suh-weet on an NX or NZ. Hurry up with those CF drivers please...
To think, combine this with an nz90. You could store everything. MP3s, JPEGs, movies (Blockbuster on your Clie). Heck if Sony would just get their act together and let you play video off the AV port, you have instant hotel-room entertainment. Or, if someone makes KaZaA for Palm OS, we can download the latest movie over hotel network and play it all on the handheld. Jeez, my first computer hard drive was four gigs.
The latest geek toy, a super-huge cf card
(Sorry about promoting the NZ so much)
