Day 4 - Translation - Easy to Use Results

My "Day 4" report is a summary of the user interface tweeks to provide English for core common system parts.

IMHO, this is "good enough" to have a workable PDA for English speakers.

For example, if you use the DataImport program, the text remains in Japanese, but most of the functionality is graphical.
Anyone with a little familiarity with PalmOS/CLIE devices should be able to figure it out.

More work could be done to increase the amount of English in the apps, but that's up to you. The existing replacements are very small (except the Launcher replacement which is >200KB)

Things in English:

+ Category names (except the last one "Unfiled")
+ System alerts
+ other commonly used system wide things
+ most of Prefs panels (smattering of Japanese)
+ mini apps like Calculator, HotSync, Security
+ default app launcher

For other applications, I suggest using the methods suggested in the "Day 3" report, in particular find an existing English alternative.

I would not try it without asking CP first. I would doubt anyone has tried it, because that would be risking having to perform a hard reset, which we do not enjoy.

The same technique can be used for other models (was attempted for the NX), see the "Day 3" writeup for tips. However it can be a lot of work and trial-and-error to get it right.

thanks for the feedback! I'm not comfortable enough yet with the Japanese language to try to make the edits, but I'm VERY thankful for all your advice in this forum...I've put so many of these good tips to work on my TH55 that I rarely "see" the Japanese elements anymore.

There must be a way to localize this machine more easily somehow...I'll keep searching.
