hi -- recently, my clie just plain stopped having the ability to sync. i get the message - "hotsync operation was interrupted. some of your data was not backed up. for details tap hotsync log on the hotsync screen". here's the log -
---
HotSync operation started 03/09/03 20:44:14
- Installed file: C:\Program Files\Sony Handheld\subram\backup\-_Getting_Started_Tips_-.PDB
- Install failed: C:\Program Files\Sony Handheld\subram\backup\Acrobat_Reader.PRC
Install synchronization failed
Restore application database error
HotSync Error: Connection is lost (6410)
HotSync operation complete 03/09/03 20:44:39

---

this has been happening for a while, and i'm not sure what it is. alphabetically, the fiiirst pdb file it tries to update used to be a game. i thought that was the problem, so i got rid of that on my harddrive so it wouldn't try to sync it with the clie. now it seems to crap out on acrobat instead. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. should i uninstall and reinstall? in the meantime, i was just using the clie without syncing for a while, but then it somehow completely drained of batteries over the course of a trip where i had forgotten to bring the charger. i had to hard reset because the cradle wouldn't even recognize it. so now the only hope i have of restoring would be to get the sync working again. any help is GREATLY appreciated.

thanx

Well, my only idea is to uninstall and reinstall like you said, I have had this problem, but only when I tried to sync the first couple of times, then uninstall and reinstall worked. But I haven't had it just stop working out of the blue.

do you think i'd be able to restore if i saved the backup directory and copied over the new one once i uniinstalled and reinstalled?

thanx

I had a similar problem syncing on Linux and found that it was a overload of the USB on my motherboard.

My mobo didn't like 115,200, to an extent. It would properly sync small files, but big ones would drop left and right.

I dropped the sync speed to 57,600 and I haven't had a problem since.

Can't guarentee that's the issue, but it's worth a shot.

thanks, scotto -- your suggestion helped me figure out what the problem was. i was able to get farther by taking down the speed a bit, but still not all the way. in poking around, i realized that i had the cradle plugged into a usb hub, and not directly into my machine. it just wasn't getting the attention it deserved, apparently :) everything is good now... thanx

How do you connect the cradle directly to the machine? Or lower the sync speed? My girlfriend and I use the same cradle to the same USB port, except she uses a SJ30 clie and I use a T615c. She can sycn fine, but mine just stopped working two weeks ago. The Sony tech support guy said we can use the same cradle and the same software, no problem, but now there seems to be a problem.

Any help?

When I say "stopped working" I mean that it can't connect to the desktop. Everything else works fine. Sorry I wasn't clear.

When someonse says "connected directly to the PC", they are referring to connecting to the USB port rather than having a USB hub BETWEEN the USB port and your cradle.

To change the speed, go down to the "tray" usually located in the lower right hand corner of your computer screen. Find an icon that looks like 2 arrows (1 red, 1 blue). Right-click on that icon. You'll see a list pop-up. Click on "setup" from that list.

Next, click on the "local" tab and you'll see speed is the second option down.

Now I am confused. What do you mean "won't connect to the desktop?"

I change the speed on the Clie itself, by opening the HotSync program and using the "Connection Setup" menu item. Choose "Cradle/Cable" in the list presented and hit the "Edit..." button. In the resulting edit screen, choose the "Details..." button and change the speed from the pulldown list.
I keep the flow control option on automatic.

When I push the hot sync button on the cradle, or tap on the sync icon on the clie screen, it attempts to sync... and then says:

"The connection between your handheld computer and the desktop could not be established. Please check your setup and try again."

Changing the speed has no effect, and the connection is tight because the cradle works with another clie.:(

At this point, madpatrick, I'd do a soft reset and see if that clears it up.
