View Full Version : Backupbuddy problems

I got frustrated with another backup program I was using, so finally made the jump to backupbuddyvfs pro. Since I installed it, I've had 3 hard resets in 3 days. The first hard reset happened when my palm froze while BBvfs was backing up my datebook database (I could see it on the screen), the other two times the screen was just white so I couldn't tell, but this seems to be happening when it does a scheduled backup of about 1mb worth of files to my memory stick. There never seems to be a problem when I manually launch this backup. To top that off, Backupbuddy2 on the desktop restored my palm, but after soft resetting, would not bootup properly even when holding the up button, so I had to Hardreset it as well. Rather than doing a restore I tried manualy installing all my programs and databases I thought I still might need. That seemed to work until today when Backupbuddyvfs was set to autobackup, and it froze my palm which resulted in another hard reset. I know this is one of the most popular backup programs, just wondering why it is causing me all this grief.

The lastest version (as of this morning) was 3.04. You might try loading that. There are apparently some problems with compression (and maybe other areas) on OS4 devices. It works flawlessly on my T3.
I have had numerous problems with Backupbuddy restoring from a compressed AND encrypted backup. The program doesn't necessarily say that some databases failed to restore (although it does bring up that message for some errors). When I start using programs some databases then cause a soft reset. Most noticeable of these issues is the fonts that I use with eReader. Those need to be restored from my computer.
I have turned off the compression (I am on OS5) but will try today's version 3.04 and see if anything has changed.

I just downloaded it myself to evaluate. I also have backupman but there was one problem with that. A few files didn't get backed up luckily they did in hotsync. And I was able to restore them after my battery drained when it locked in the on possision in my pocket and I didn't even know it :( If i had losed those files it would have been devastating since one of them contains contact information and job tracking for my customers.
While I'm on the subject. Does backupbuddy really backup everything? And can individualy pref files be restored if need be. Backupman backs up the pref files but as a whole so from what I can tell I would have to restore all or none but didn't even try selecting it and clicking restore for fear of messing up anything.

BBVFS Pro can back up everything including the preference files and then restore them or any file individually.

Ok, I'll really miss the compression though, that was probably the feature that tipped the balance for me in purchasing it. No compression in OS4 :( Hopefully they can fix it and add it back in.

Since upgrading to 3.04 my scheduled backup fails. They all ran fine under 3.01 - and now Crash catches a Fatal Exception in BackupBuddyVFS 3.04. I have compression turned on, but not encryption.
Anyone else having such issues?

I just did yesturday. My 1st problem was after running it the 1st time I lost all data on my memory card. I don't know if it solely the fault of backupbuddy though. I tried running it again this time the scheduled backup locked up the palm with a fatal exception error. It sat in my pocket until it nearly drained the battery. I noticed it when I went to check some notes for work. I was able to run a manual backup without the error. I'm going to make that backup checkpoint or what ever it was called and let it run the schedule again to see if the error happens again. I'm still really bummed I lost all 12 of my backup from backupman with the card getting cleared. I still have no idea what all the factors were that caused it to happen. It almost happened again the other day. I put the card back in after looking to see what card I had in and it said the card wasn't formatted. After copying backupbuddy to the card. And I was oh no it did it again. I put it in my card reader and verified the card was indeed still intact and put it back in my T E and all was normal again.

I, too, can run a manual backup without issue. but every scheduled backup since I upgraded has failed (and the log doesn't show it failing at the same file)
I reckon I'll open a support ticket with BlueNomad...

I just got a reply from BlueNomad that the 3.04 scheduled backup issue is compression related. If you disable compression, it should work fine. I like the compression so I reverted to 3.03 for now. Excellent support--a fix is already in the works.

Where can i get 3.03. I will want to use compression too so that there is less space used overall on my 256MB card. I like to go back as far as 2 weeks for just in case senario where there is a delayed problem or some oddity that might require me to retrieve data from that far back.
But speaking of going to weeks worth of backups. Is there a way to set the auto backups to be checkpoints or after the auto backup to auto set a checkpoint. Backupman has a setting to keep X number of past backups I have it set to 14. I would also like to do something like this in backup buddy.

If there's a way to do scheduled backup checkpoints, I don't know how. Email BlueNomad support about the issue and they'll send 3.03 to you.

Being a OS 4.1 user, and trying out version 3.0, I was dissapointed with the errors and eventual hardreset and loss of data. I would get memory errors when trying to restore databases, mostly the datebook and memo database. It would then fail on numerous other databases, with no explanation why.
I ultimately emailed BlueNomad and reverted to 2.15. I'm very thankful that they provided me with this as I lost my initial file! :( Regardless, I've not ventured back to version 3 yet, as there seem to be many os 4.1 related issues. I'll let some other people be the guinipigs this time round. I'm still piecing my handheld software registrations together even now.. *eek* I know they're working on fixes, so two thumbs up on that.. but I'm just going to wait.. until I know that it works.

Yes, I can attest to the great support from Blue Nomad. I opened the case, and received an email with 3.03 attached to try. It fixed my problem and I was told they were working to correct it.
