View Full Version : Will there be a tungsten c2?

Is it worth the wait for a tungsten c2? I would really like to have a wi-fi machine with built in keypad but the only options are the UX50 (appalling battery life) and the tungsten C (crippled audio). I'm really starting to wonder if palm one will ever release a c2 and whether I should just get a tungsten c while I still can. Does anyone have any concrete rumours (if that makes sense) or is the c2 just wishful thinking?

I think, a Wifi enabled spin off of the Treo line is the most probable variant at the moment. So if you want a C2 in the Treo case, with the same thumbboard and probably flash ram, heck, they even might throw BT in for some laughs, you can get in line.

Chances are there will be a p1 model with wifi that will be a logical update/upgrade to the current TC. The question that I have is whether P1 has made it like the TC or closer to the T5. My brain says the latter. 256 NAND RAM and at least the 520Mhz Intel with Cobalt seem to be the best guess on my end. Where I am having some trouble thinking is the idea of a keyboard. P1 is always about simplicity, I dont know if they will keep the keyboard, or go with a HVGA screen. My gut says they wont do both, but I dont know which one they will go with. If the said device is released, it will be a heck of a top of the line model.

I agree with you d-roc. The treo line will likley offer a non phone variant. I am a marketing student and have recently studied some product life cycle theories and the pda is currently at the end of its maturity stage and is turning to the declining sales stage. Theory suggest that to prolong the life of a product you tweak it and make it new to a different market. That is exactly what I think P1 is doing. They have extended sales into the pda/phone devices in atempt to prolong their products life. Theory also suggests that product lines left in the declining market are usually gradually phased out to appease those who are product loyal (all of us). It would not supprise me at all that within a few year(s) P1 will only be producing smartphones. And in the many late nights of reading forums across the internaet about rumors of the T5, and then realizing what a hudge dissapointment it was to most of us I decided to crank up photoshop and make my own pda at least I could look at. So taking my theories into consideration with the other ideas from many of you I have created a Treo based pda without a keypad and with wifi.
THIS IS NOT AN ACTUAL PICTURE JUST WISHFUL THINKING!

heh heh - looks better that some of the t5 mock ups ;)
I guess the thing I really need to think about is time - I don't think P1 are releasing anything else new this year. In fact we won't even get the treo 650 until next year in the UK.

News - PalmAddict Brief Interview with palmOne President - PalmZone.net at link http://www.palmzone.net/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=282
Quote from the interview:
'When confronted with the question of why the Tungsten T5 does not have Wi-Fi, he replied that palmOne's Wi-Fi product is the Tungsten C. He went on to say "It’s a great product. Powerful, great screen, keyboard. It’s only a moderate seller." '
If we the consumer has bought the T|C and made it a best seller for PalmOne then we would have a PalmOne T5 with WiFi today. I guess the sales of other WiFi enabled PDAs (HP + ..) taking market share away from the Palm OS standard does not count.
Sorry PalmOne but the WiFi card does not count or cut it.
P.S. Great PDA concept fillg2002.

Market share numbers from PPC and Palm with interesting commentary story. I hope the picture is not that bleak but number rarely lie but they often are mis-used/mis-interpreted (IMO, see above).

Has anyone taken a good look at the new I-mate II (or whatever it's called in your own country.) It reminds me a lot of your photoshopped device. It is a full-screen PDA, that happens to have cell phone functionality built-in. If Palm were to build such a device, I'd be first in line.
I think that the reason that most of us are worried about switching from a "PDA" to a "Smartphone" is because up until now smartphones have been somewhat compromised in their PDA functionality. If a future Palm smartphone had an extended screen, and Wi-Fi, many of us would happily switch to the smartphone camp, and would have no reason to miss our T3's, TH55's and UX50's.
So I have to admit, that I'm not to worried about all of the "smartphone vs. PDA" discussions, particularly in regards to PalmOne. If smartphones are where the money is at in this market, than by all means, that's where they should go. If PalmOne will just give me what I need in their next smartphone, I will happily give them my money.
Just my 2 cents...

One common rumor is that there will be a new version of the Tungsten C this spring. Only time will tell.

Please forgive the horrible editing. I do not have photoshop, I used paint. And again, yes, I am bored.

I've been an adversary of the smartphone concept from the beginning, for the reasons already mentioned (foremost is the limited functionality they have offered as PDA's). Now, having said that, if P1 came up with a 480x320/320x480 model that had phone functionality and WiFi, I might consider. The last thing that would worry me is that if one component breaks or otherwise stops functioning and you have to send it in for service, you're out everything. I don't like the thought of that.

If you are looking for decent thumbboard/keyboard, WiFi, and 320x480, why go past the NX series with WL100 CF card? I'm selling my WL100... contact me

Sorry, too much of a step backwards, and I'm not a fan of the portrait clamshell at all. Yes I am horribly picky :D
I notice though that the tungsten c can't be bought on the uk's palm one website anymore. Should I read anything into that? Of course there are rumours that there might be drivers for the wi-fi card on the treo 650. Given they havn't even got them for the t5 yet I'm not going to hold my breath! C'mon palm one, give us a built in wi-fi solution.
