View Full Version : Pocketop update

I had been hoping that my Pocketop keyboard would eventually be useable on my NX-60. I had written them in December about OS5 drivers, and they stated at that time that an OS5-compatible driver would be out early in 2003.

Now, it appears that they have essentially abandoned that effort. The email I received today from them states:

<<Unfortunately, I have to report that we do not expect to be compatible with Palm OS 5 any time in the near future, if at all. We are actually looking forward to the next release of the Palm OS, anticipating that the current issues we have will be fixed.>>

That's too bad. Though many have had bad things to say about this keyboard, I really liked the ingenious little invention. When it worked, (WHEN it worked, I should say), it was sweet.

Probably because the keyboard needs internal modification in order to make it work, similar situation to the Sony KB11.

I got a similar reply to an email from them a month ago...they said they were waiting for the new version (5.2) of the PalmOS because of issues with Sony not releasing APIs or something like that. I gave up and got a great deal on a Belkin G700, downloaded the new driver from another thread here and am very happy with it. I'm not even looking back...

I see that the last posting on this pocketop thread was in March. Is there any sign since then that the pocketop Wireless PDA keyboard will have drivers for NX70? I bought it today not realizing the NX70 isn't supported - very dissappointing. This is the second time I've bought a KB for my clie and found I had to take it back.

I see pocketop has new drivers on their site - has anyone tried these v 1.6 drivers with the NX70? Has anyone found a workaround or another driver that works?

Thanks for any new info on this topic. I think I'm going to have to return this and get a Targus, although the Targus isn't available in Canada yet.

Hi Vanessa,

You may as well take it back; those 1.6 drivers have been out since the first of this year. They don't appear to be updating their drivers at all anymore. I know how you must feel, but if you can get a refund or exchange for something else, then that is the best.

You might also want to consider the Belkin 700 series. It is a little buggy, but still manages to work OK most of the time. It is not wireless however.

Hello Vanessa,

I still have my Pocketop on the off chance that I move on to another device that may be supported. I was just at their site yesterday and was very dissapointed to see that what dan3750 said above is true - no updates. The Belkin G700 has been serving me well with my NX70. The driver isn't perfect but it is satisfactory enough to work for me daily. I got a refurb G700 for around $50 from the Belkin site. It's been well worth it.

Good luck-

Thanks cambium and Dan. I took my pocketop back and got my money back. Very disappointed.

I tried to order a Targus from Amazon.com, but they won't ship outside the US, and Amazon.ca doesn't have it. Targus Canada responded to my "where can I buy it in Canada" with the name of a US site that will sell outside the US only with a minumum order of $500. Usually we can get new products here easily, but the Targus seems to be an exception.

Regarding the Belkin, on their site it says it works with
"Sony CLIE T/SL/SJ/NR" - it doesn't mention NX. Does it work with NX for certain?

Belkin also has the # F8U1500 wireless, which they say is compatible with CLIE S/N/T/SL/SJ/NR/series - but again no mention of the NX.

Belkin will ship to Canada, so if I knew for sure that one of these models was compatible, I'd order.

Cambium and Dan - since you both have the NX70 working with a Belkin 700, it must work - did you use the new drivers, and if so which of the new drivers. They show 2 on the site:

First is listed as: G700 PDA Keyboard for Sony CLIE
Download | FAQ F8Y1501

Second is listed as: G700 PDA Keyboard for Sony CLIE T/SL/SJ/NR
Download | FAQ F8Y1501

This sounds like they are both the same, but then why would they have separate download links. What's your experience with these drivers?
