MY PC crashed under the XP SP2 upgarde and much stuff was lost but now I'm trying to re-install the CLié desktop (no problems last year when I did it then) and it keeps failing.
Looking at the Palm site I need to load the USB drivers but despite a dialog box for location XP won't read from the chosen location...... (CD).
I have to get the desktop re-established for my NX70 before I upgrade to the TH55 (that one won't work either....)
Help greatly appreciated!

Hve you chosen the USB file from the CD directly when it asks you to?

yes and it won't install from either the CD or the HDD when copied.
I've been at this for about 3 hours and it's driving me crazy....

If you havent, try removing the USB device (probally marked as ! unknown), and restarting computer.
I saw a post not long ago with similar problem, and one suggestion was to delete the inf or driver file on PC before reloading USBdrivers.... now if only I could remeber what file or find that post .... :/

thanks tried that - removed "unknown" and unplugged the cradle only to find the PC found the "unknown" again and reinstalled it. Connected the cradle and no response on a manual or auto scan.
Must search for that post you mentioned - and to cap it all my Logitech MX mouse is now going haywire! It never rains...

I think I've cracked it at last - there is no installed USB supoort with the initial install and after hours of trawling it appears there is a patch that muct be applied BEFORE hotsyncing the Clié.
Now I have to work out why the addressbok wouldn't sync but everything else has.
Anyone any ideas?
error: Address Book
- Some handheld records were not copied to your PC. Your computer may be full or you may have reached the maximum allowed records on the desktop. To correct this situation, delete some records and perform a HotSync operation again.
Desktop = 0, Handheld = 117
Address Book synchronization failed

I`ve had that one too. Now how did i fix it again....
one thing to try is to change all of the conduits to "Handheld Overwrites PC", then sync, then put them BACK to "Synchronize The Data".
Another possibilty is to ensure that no Date Book records have a special character (usually an asterisk) or text placed beside the dates. (from sony support).

also worth a try is dbscan - a tool to repair datebook database

thanks for your help and the pointers.
I've never had to change conduit settings before where should I look? The NX has a list in the Hotsync app of active conduits but no setting I can see for changing priorities. Oddly, Hotsync isn't now working it returns "an app on the PC failed to respond to the initialisation notification" will reboot both to see if that makes a difference.
[later]
the PC reports an 8009 error but running hotsyncheck all is apparently OK! and the Palm desktop crashes without opening.... and all I want to do is backup and migrate, there's got to be a better way. Oh well more wasted hours I guess.

To change hotsync settings, right click the hotsync icon on the sys tray and choose custom.

Someone had that 8009 the other day.. seems to be indictive of a windows reg error.
The palm support page (http://kb.palmone.com/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBCGI.EXE?New,Kb=PalmSupportKB,ts=Palm_External2001,case=obj(1005)) for 8009 error doesnt seem over helpful.
An “8009” error on the PC during a HotSync® operation may indicate a problem with one or more entries in the Windows registry. The error message reads, "an application has failed to respond to a HotSync notification –(8009)". The cause for this error may be related to Palm synchronization conduits or 3rd party software installed on the computer.
There are three likely causes of this issue:
1. Specific Documents to Go® software (notifiers) installed in an incorrect location on the desktop computer.
2. A non-Microsoft MAPI.DLL file is installed on the desktop computer. This DLL may be installed by non-Microsoft specific email clients. Users of Outlook or Outlook Express are less likely to experience this issue.
3. A 3rd party synchronization conduit may be causing the 8009 error.
I was going to link to the reg cleaners that might help in that other post (http://www.1src.com/forums/showthread.php?t=71038) then realised it was you.... I assume the reg cleaners didnt help....
Yet Another Thing To Try: (from HelpHand (http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Acres/3216/faq_pg6.htm)) is:
Symptoms
"An application on the desktop failed to respond to a HotSync notification. Please check the desktop for details. (8009) "
Cause
You might have a similar message if you try to open the File Link portion of the HotSync application. What this seems to be connected to (among other things) is having a Registry entry which points to conduits or Palm programs on your PC which aren't working or aren't on the Palm yet. Basically, your Registry entries for the Palm and HotSync don't agree with what you actually have on your computer, on your Palm, or have gotten corrupted in some way.
Solution
WARNING! Please, please, please don't mess with your Registry if you don't have a backup of your computer, don't know what you’re doing, or don't like living on the edge. You could experience tragic results if you make a mistake.
You can try editing the Registry by hand if you want (and can stand the pressure) but these instructions simply delete the corrupted Registry entries, and rebuild that section of the Registry. Here are the step-by-steps:
Close HotSync on the taskbar.
Close any and all windows, applications or processes running.
Open Regedit (go to Start menu, "Run" and type 'regedit'
Export the Registry (all, not just a branch) in case you need it as a backup
Open HKEY_CURRENT_USER.
Open "Software".
Find the US Robotics entry and expand it.
Select Pilot Desktop folder and delete it.
Quit Regedit.
Open Run on Start menu, enter "C:\Palm\hotsync -r" using your correct path to the HotSync.exe. Be sure to add the " -r" after it. This is what will rebuild the Registry entries. After a few moments, you should see the HotSync icon appear in the System Tray on the Taskbar.
Before doing anything else, restart your machine.
Everything should be working now. The basic HotSync should work. Then you can replace, reinstall, and re-setup your other applications.
But I`ve never tried it....
As you seem to be getting up to depserate straights would be to reinstall palm desktop again, and hope it runs long enough to export the data you need for back up. You could also try the clie migration tool to see if that can be any use.
Good luck with it all :D

many thanks for the links - I've just about given up on it as I've lost count of the # of times I've un/installed etc and I've spent ~7 hours on it already. Crazy isn't it?
The latest suggestion of a possible problem is that the Clié install has an earlier system file - MFC42.DLL - than the current XP version so that may be an issue and I'll copy it to all locations where it's present on the HDD.
The reg cleaners took a fair amount of crap out but aren't now finding anything after an install/re-inst.
I've also followed the help pages on PalmOne and also ignoring CLie Desktop and using only the Palm desktop - nothing provides a complete solution.
I'll give it one final go tomorrow then I'll quit. Ironically I'm also having trouble with the new TH55 install..... (separately not in tandem/parallel with the NX).
[and to mrdeucie - it was set to overwrite the desktop anyway]

Are installing the software/desktop for TH55 on another computer?
Tenex
10-28-2004, 06:20 AM
no, it will be this one. Once I have the NX backed up and the migration transfer done I'll then uninstall the NX stuff and install the TH55 software.
Final attempt this evening ;)
