How can I view JPG files on my memory stick?

Someone mentioned a piece of software that will view JPG's, I forgot to download it.

What do you suggest?

The SJ33 CD has PictureGear 4.6 Lite on it.

My VAIO laptop came with PictureGear 5.1 and I've hod no luck installing pictures on the MS via PictureGear (yes, I installed the plugin from the CD).

I'm now going to downgrade to 4.6 Lite and see if I have better luck.

Stay tuned.

You know that the MS Import application on your CLIE turns it into a $300 Memory Stick reader/writer, don't you? If all you want to do is push the JPG files to your CLIE, don't go through a 3rd party application.

Simply run MS Import on your CLIE, then open Windows File Manager (Explorer), and drag and drop your files on the Memory Stick. You can navigate the MS directories from Windows, and create folders where you want them.

On the other hand, if your JPG files are large, you may *want* to use a 3rd party application to trim them down.

To answer the original poster's question, I use SplashPhoto to view JPG images on my CLIE.

Hope this helps...

You can also use jpgview, which is a shareware program:

No I didn't know what MSImport was used for. I have a MS slot in my VAIO and I dropped a JPG on the MS but I wasn't able to view it in PG Pocket, the image viewer that comes default on the Clie.

All the suggested programs cost money. Are there any freeware image viewers that people can recommend. I'm rarely going to view photos on my Clie so paying $20 for something that's rarely going to be used is not economical for me.

Use jpgview, you actually don't have to register it. But if it ends up working for you and you use it regularly, it only costs $8.

You have to use PictureGear on your PC to convert it if you want to view the pictures in Picture Gear Pocket on your Clie.

You'll need the JPEG library files. To install jpgs to MS you have to use MSImport. Splash Photo desktop also will transfer jpg files to MS via hotsync.

Elf,

See my post in the below thread for more specifics about how to use MS Import and to put pictures onto the MS using PictureGear 4.6

as far as I know you can't directly put JPG pics on memory stick and be able to view it in CLie. You must convert them to PGP or DCF files that Clie will read. It will be done automatically in Picture Gear 4.6 that came ith Clie. But one warning, there is a different procedure of installing pictures on to Clie or to MS. In Picture Gear select Export to MS instead to HotSync and you must have MS Imposrt opened on CLie. That worked for me, I hope this helps.

Ack, for the 3rd time, use jpgview (link above)! ;)

This program lets you view jpg files directly from a memory stick. The program is uncrippled shareware, so you don't have to pay unless it's worth it for you (only $8).

It's not superfast, but does its job. It will autoscale your images also.

LOL!:D I think he wanted something cheaper though. I'm actually going to try it to see if it's faster than jpgview.

Try VFSi + JPEG library files. That's free.

Freeware CRS Image viewer views jpg files. Must get latest version, earlier versions were limited to bmp files. Also requires JPEG Library files.

madmaxmedia,  I installed jpgview to RAM and when I want to load some jpg images to MS via MSImport, the jpgview register screen pops up and crippled my MS driver (no Removable drive show up in Windows Explorer).  Do you know why?

BTW, after deleting jpgview, my MSImport is working back to normal.  Thank goodness!

I think I try CRS-image view now.  Found it in Application page.  Is version 0.8 the latest one?

DanT, I think it's in the file section on this site.

Here's the link.
http://www.cliesource.com/sdownload/index.php?op=showfiles&catid=7&sortby=date&sortorder=DESC

I believe .8 is the latest, but you can click the developers web page link to be sure.

There is also an app VFSi, which is a combination file manager/imageviewer. I don't use either. ZLauncher is my launcher and it is a fine jpg image viewer. Just lacks a slide show feature. Now that it has a robust file manager also, it is getting worth the memory overhead. I have now deleted both McFile and Filez from my Clie. Could also get by without any other image viewer, except for the slide show capability.

Yes. 0.8 is the latest. I just downloaded from the developer's site.

I installed VFSi last night. It worked, in that I was able to drop a JPG onto my memory stick and view it (have to double-click on the filename).

The image is displayed fullsize and centered. As the image was bigger than the screen I wanted to zoom-out. Couldn't figure out how to do it (I clicked on the image being viewed and a menu with "Zoom..." pops-up, but then what?!).

Thumbnail support would be nice.

Thanks Sebring. I think I edited my post at the same time you're replying to my question. It looks like there are two .prcs in there, the older one for .bmp and the newer one for .jpg. Cool!

Also Chapeyalas (I hope I spell his name right) uploaded the T665 jpeg library and jpeg utility library on the other thread. So I need both of these libraries for CRS-image view?

Thanks.

I read the description of VFSi.  It says for viewing .bmp images.  Did you say it works for .jpg too?  If you have a choice between VFSi and CRS-imageview, which one would you pick and why?

Thanks.

Dan,

I'm pretty sure you need both of them. I haven't comfirmed this, but I believe you need them with any jpg image viewer. They take up about 100k combined, but they save more than that with just the difference between jpg and bmp of one image, with no loss of quality, just a tiny bit slower loading.

VFSi does JPGs too. You have to install the plugin that comes in the zip-file.

I just tried CRS-i and there really is no difference in rendering speed. VFSi shows a progress meter while it is rendering the image while CRS-i shows a blank screen.

CRS-i displays the image name below the image while VFSi doesn't.

VFSi has the ability to annotate the image with a comment and displays more information about the image than does CRS-i.

I think I'll stick with VFS-i. They are both works-in-progress, so it remains to be seen which is the better of the two.

I dearly miss the ability to view thumbnails of all the images I have and to be able to zoom-in/out with both applications.

And it doesn't help that the README files are in Japanese.
:(

Thanks Sebring it works!

Yes it is slow even with jpg. I thought I crash my Clie again (happens to me a lot lately) with white screen shown for about 30 seconds just to display a 115KB jpg image. I might try to overlcock it (from the default 33 to 53 MHz) and see if this speed things up.

BTW, does anyone knows if the Edit button work? And what the R button , next to Close, button for?

sebring

115kb is pretty big for a jpg, most of mine are 50k or less. There isn't any difference in loading jpg between my N and my NR, that can't be accounted for by the difference in processors N being 33mhz and NR being 66mhz.

Actually, the jpgs on my N are even smaller, since they are sized to fit the smaller screen.

elf & sebring, thanks for the replies.

At 53 MHz I was able to open the image in about 19 seconds, so its not bad.

AcidImage is a great program. It loads files fast, and the ability to scale on the fly is great as well. I'll have to decide whether it's worth the $20 when the trial is up... (don't need it that much)

I'll try the other one now-

One big advantage of viewing original jpg's is that all the converter type programs seem to end up with large files.

I tried VFSi on my N760C but it does not seem to work. When I tapped the icon, it poped up a "Message Box" window with the following message:

Image plugin 'VFSi HWjpeg Plugin' cannot be registered.
Please check version and recommended machine type.

I thought the reason that it did not work was because the N760C does not have the JPEG library and JPEG Util Library, which I have added, including all of the plug-in files of VFSi. Apparently that is not the case. Oh well, at least I still have CRS-i to work.

I thought the same thing too Dan, but couldn't get it to work.
