I received ZLauncher 230B2 last night. A coupl of new features that I noticed in a few minutes of playing:

- the File Manager now lets you Deselect a group
- Under Category setup, there's an option to Clear orphaned records.

It may be my imagination, but File Manager seems much quicker in this beta, not that it was slow before. Also fixed the fatal exception when selecting info, in File Manager, for a file on MS and MS tab hidden.

Does the file manager allow you to rename a file? I couldn't figure out how to do so with beta1 ...

Bob That's a pretty neat addition . . . pretty soon nobody will need any app but ZL...it will be it's own very customizable, beautiful operating system.

I don't think there is a link; I think it's just being sent out to those who reported problems with the last beta to see if it fixes their issue, but I could be wrong.

One other thing that it fixes is the problem that I reported on the NX, where if you moved an app to the MS using T&H, Move To ..., then it froze up the launcher. This is now fixed.

The new version has not been posted yet. Last time it was posted to their download section if you knew the file name. Try http://www.zztechs.com/download/ZL230b2.zip . It's not there now but may be soon. I will ask if they mind if we post to ClieSource.

At the same time I'll ask for the ability to Rename files.

So, is that clear orphaned records a fix for the ZLauncherDB file growing really large?

I'm not sure because my DB is fairly small. I ran it and it shrunk by 2K. Hopefully rtimmel or rhart00 will try it and let us know.

Mine went from 319K to 311K :)

ZLDB = 722k. didn't do anything I guess. need to get around to emailing zztechs about it I guess

Anybody else have a problem this new beta and uninstall manager (running in background). Uninstall Manager worked fine until I installed this new beta. Now every time I try to delete a file, my NX freezes and I have to do a pin soft reset.

I don't use uninstall manager, but you should send an e-mail to ZZTechs. This beta fixes a couple of different bugs that I sent to them this week.

I tried it, but it did not do a whole lot. My DB went from 238.8K to 227.4K, about 4%. I'm guessing the size may have something to do with the number of programs I keep on my card. When I get a little time, I will delete the database and re-scan and re-classify everything to see how much of the database deals with existing programs and how much was from orphans.

You can change the name in the info screen to whatever you want, then select save. If the file is on MS, the new name won't appear until you refresh apps.

I hate it when that happens:( I obviously tried to rename a file that was in use and foolishly concluded that I couldn't rename. Duuh. Way cool product.

Hello all.

It would be handy if ZZtechs added a shortcut that could be launched through apps like mcphling or easylaunch and the main launcher that could bring us to the ZL file manager (makes my purchase of PiMover pointless :).

Say I'm in two programs, I like to switch between an app, and the file manager quickly. Without a launchable shortcut, that wouldn't be possible.

D'oh! I should have been able to figure that out. Thanks for the clue.

On the rename question. I think you can rename only apps (via Info either in the File Manager or the launcher itself), not databases. Try selecting a database (not in use) in the file manager, click "Info" and notice that the underline (which indicates that the title is editable) isn't there. Or am I wrong?

Another new feature is "Fast Scroll."

Try this... Go to a tab with more than one screen's worth of icons (e.g. "All"). Drag the scroll bar. Notice how it redraws as you drag. Now turn "Fast Scroll" on (Display Prefs). Now, when you drag the scroll bar, nothing happens until you "let go."

Actually, the name change doesn't seem permanent. I guess there really isn't a good way to rename files.

Upon the second hotsync everything goes ok, it is just the initial hotsync that produces a reset.

Glad I looked a little harder here as I was trying to figure out what that did just now:)

I suspect that any database that's owned by an app can't be renamed. Sort of a safety precaution and sort of makes sense. If the app is looking for a particular name, changing it messes things up nicely.

hmmmm... I'm not sure this one seems like something to jump right into. It looks (on the yahoo group) like there might be more glitches than improvements for now...

I'm using it and haven't had any problems on my NX. I also looked through the ZL forum and didn't notice anyone having problems with this version. It was b1 that had a few minor bugs.

Apparently, ZLauncher's File Manager doesn't like for the MS tab to be hidden. All the errors I have experienced with either of these two betas, only occured if the MS tab was hidden. I get a "sys0502" error in this beta when I try to move a file from one MS directory to another MS directory, and the MS tab is hidden. If I unhide the MS tab, no problems.

PS: These two betas are as stable as most full release commercial software.

That's what I get for not reading more carefully.

Thanks

Yep, same here. Have to turn off Uninstall Manager's monitoring to delete without a reset.:(

Am thinking about sending ZZTechs a note about this but wanted to check with B2 users first to see if this has changed. . .I'm just using B1. . .

I'm growing sort of fond of those pop-up category tabs, been trying them out to see how I'd like them. . . .but I'd like to be able to change color on the text in the color settings tool so that text is readable in any theme. (Am using Copper Deck II right now, would be MUCH easier to read if text color was white, for example).

If category tab text color isn't customizable in B2 I'll go ahead and send in my piddling little request . . . or have I missed something? Tried all the color settings, nothing seemed to affect those.

TIA

Anita

Not sure exactly what you mean by "pop-up category tabs", but if you are refering to the "Tab Panel", I don't believe there is a way to change the text color yet. I think you can get B2 at the Yahoo ZLauncher Group if you want to check it out yourself.

I meant the tab panel, yes. Just couldn't remember the official name for it <g>.

Does the final version of 2.3 fix the conflict with Uninstall Manager? I would like to know before updating Zlauncher. Thanks.

I am a beta tester. Is it better to have 2.30beta2 or the 2.30 that just came out?

rldunn
03-18-2003, 05:11 PM
Non-beta is usually more stable and newer is usually better, so 2.30 release version wins on both accounts.

I expect that there were more bug fixes after B2. I asked about posting B2 and they suggested I wait for more bug fixes. Then the release came out. That's what I'm using.

Aside from that, if you do find a bug and you're using B2, the first question will be "Does it happen in the 2.30 released version?". Might as well move up. I usually keep a few old versions around just in case. But with ZLauncher, I've never had to go back.
