Hello,
I just recently purchased a UX50 which I love. I have used the searched engine and read plenty of posts but still come up empty handed.
My first question is it possible to check AOL e-mail through the Ux50? I have downloaded SnapperMail and configured my e-mail to it. I can only send e-mail but I can not check my inbox for any messages. Any programs to acutally check your inbox or am I doing something wrong?
My second question is putting files in the Alias Ext folder. I have follwed the directions and it works on most programs. But there is one program that doesn't, TABERS which is a medical dictionary. The four files that needs to be installed are TABERS.prc (188KB), TABERS.pdb (6,013kb), SmartJPeg.prc (64kb), SmartRender.prc (37kb). Which files needs to be placed into the Alias.ext folder? I have tried numberous times of different combinations but can't get it to work. Once I put TABERS.pdb into the Alias.ext folder and I attempt to open the program, a message pops up saying I did not download the database. It is a big file, could that be a reason? I also tried using POWERRUN, but to no avail.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

AOL mail can be checked using standard POP settings. Check AOL (http://help.channels.aol.com/article.adp?catId=1&sCId=416&sSCId=4093&articleId=217449) for details on getting the settings right. Once you have the right settings, Snapper (or ClieMail for that matter) should be able to handle it just fine.
I don't know about the program that you're talking about specifically, but the AliasExt doesn't work for all programs. It sounds like you've done everything you can to make it work, but the only other thing that I can think of is that you might try putting the DB in a folder called TABERS rather than in Alias ext, and leave the program itself in main memory. The website for that software says that it supports SD and MS, so my guess is that they normally set it up with its own folder on the card, and access it that way. Once you've got the DB in the right place you could try putting the prc in the alias ext folder and see what happens, if you're really concerned about saving main memory.
Just a thought.
Welcome!

Thank you for your response. Well I believe all my settings are correct for AOL and I still have trouble recieving any messages at all. I also tried putting a TABERS folder inside the Alias ext but again, the program does not work. Thanks for your effort. Any other ideas anyone?

Well, I just actually read the page I linked for you, and discovered that AOL sez you need to use IMAP not POP. While my mail provider supports both, maybe AOL doesn't.

So unless you have the "enterprise" edition of snapper, it looks like you're going to have a problem getting your email. THe only other IMAP client that I know worth trying is Agendus Mail, which I use. Maybe it's not as good as snapper in some respects, but it's also a third cheaper.
I've never heard of a mail provider not being accesible by POP -- even when they're supporting IMAP. So I don't understand why AOL wouldn't give you that option except that maybe they're controlling the user experiencee to the point of not allowing a user to have email on one machine that's not available on another. IMAP goons! Anyway, I have to figure there's some way to access it through POP so maybe googling around to see if there's a way is a good idea. Or calling AOL support. AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA:)

As for the Tabers, I was saying put the folder NOT in the alias ext. But honestly, I don't really know -- best to get the FAQ from the software manufacturer about how it installs on a card, and just configure it that way.

I don't know what the big hype about SnapperMail is...my Agendus Mail program works just fine...never had a problem with it. And it does both, IMAP and POP

Easiest way is to just buy the AOL software for Palm

about aliasExt folder, it should work just fine as its data oriented (don't take my word for it as aliasExt is still a little blurry for me :). just telling by my experience using aliasExt). more complicated apps would have problems. its true what justanoob said, not all apps work in aliasExt folder. i once tried copying appshelf to aliasExt. did work but had two copies. it somewhat couldnt update itself in aliasExt. bottom line my guess is, if it doesn't need updating regularly than its not a problem.

powerrun didn't work eh? thats weird. if that didn't work, probably you're tabers app just dont work :D. try this, under aliasExt folder>create 3 folders for the 3 PRC's only and create a subfolder under your tabers folder for tabers pdb.

or simply

leave all PRC's on handheld memory and create folder for pdb files. it such a nuisance for me sometimes (i have to keep updating my apps) that apps like file manager (filez, verichat, etc), i just simply leave it in handheld memory. games work great though on aliasExt. absolutely great with warfareInc...

cheers :D

Gopherking is an excellent service for viewing all your email accounts from a PDA; requires a subscription of $39 per year, however.
