Can anyone recommend one over the other: a portable charger using a 9 volt battery (Brando) or one using 4 AAs (eBay) for use with a TH-55? Thanks.

I use the Brando 9V and all I can say is that it works. The down side is that a 9V battery is quite expensive compared to AAs but the advantage is that the charger is smaller, there is essentially no bulk to it at all, it is just 2 connectors connected to each other by a piece of wire.
For what it's worth, here's my charging strategy. As soon as I got my TH55 I bought a 9V charger and a USB charger (the tiny one with the clever spring-loaded device to roll up the lead). I bought both from Brando and their service and delivery time were excellent. I now keep my 9V charger in my travel washbag so that whenever I am away from home it is always there without me thinking about it, and it takes up about as much room as a large pair of nail clippers. I never expect to use my 9V charger, it really is for emergency only because the batteries are an expensive way to charge a TH55, but it is useful to know it is there and I did have cause to use it this weekend for the first time.
For business trips or holidays where I will be away for more than 3 or 4 days and might need to charge my TH55 then I take my USB charger on the basis that if I am visiting customers or friends then there will always be a computer somewhere with a USB port to charge my TH55. To a large extent even my USB charger is an emergency charger since on a 5 day trip I usually don't need to recharge because of the excellent battery life on the TH55.
My mains charger never leaves my house and I use it exclusively for home charging.

The main difference besides size is capacity.
The AA charger will provide more power longer, allowing operating time while charging.
The 9v charger is basically a one-shot for charging only. A 9v battery simply doesn't have the capacity to do much more.

Check out what pulls up in a "TH55" search on eBay! There are many cheap multi-charger packages. I got a "AA" charger that works for under $10 and a kit with cigarette lighter charger and a miriad of other charger connectors for about $15. Service from the provider(s) I went with was excellent. ;)
