The reason I ask this is, that I am thinking of upgrading my T665 to TG50, but I am scared to do this, as at the rate clie's become "old" is begining to scare me!!!

3 months.
I believe that SEEMS to be the pattern.
:P
I BOUGHT an NX70 in December. Is it already obsolete? Oh well, ONE OF THE BEST purchases I have ever made.
It has met and gone BEYOND any of my expectations...

I give it 20 minutes. My friend still uses old S300 even though I told him it was useless when I sold it to him. For some reason he still uses it, claiming it still meets "all his needs". Please, how can it meet his needs when it lacks the lastest in washer machine/snow plowing technology. I mean how can he be satisfied with just keeping track of his contacts, calendar, to do list, short memos, and occasional game of solataire.....

Remember, users of PDAs from other PalmOS PDA vendors are just now getting 320x320 screens and mp3 playback -- something that CLIE users had two years ago. Sony releasing new models doesn't mean that the current crop is 'obsolete' in the whole scheme of things.

HA! Yes, I guess that he hasn't reached proper GEEKDOM yet! :p
How dare he say that it meets all his needs! He can't even get it to tie his shoes! Yeesh, he's outdated!

I know! I still drive my GMC Jimmy that I bought in 1994! It has 190,000 miles and still works everyday. Heck, I even have a 1965 Ford Mustang! And guess what, every year a new model of car is introduced and my "obsolete" cars still operate! Just b/c there is newer, as long as I can drive, I'm happy. Same with clies. If it does what you need, don't worry!

I am sorry to inform you that the TG50 has been discontinued 30 seconds ago :D
(Sony has a prototype for the upcoming CLIE)

If I do get it, and it works for me, then I suspect it will work until I can pay cash for the next latest and greatest model.

People, this isn't a nuclear missle defense system, it's a bloody PDA, it doesn't go obsolete!!!! Does common sense escape like everyone???? I could upgrade my bottle opener, but the one I have just manages to open the beer I need to cope with posts like this. Just don't ask me if your NR is upgradable to OS5, then I might have to get one of those new model bottle openers.....
and people wonder about my avatar....

AHHHHHH!!!!!!
I have to go watch "Clerks" on DVD. I'm not even supposed to be here today.....
I see no reason for not purchasing a TG50, assuming that it meets your needs. If, however, it is missing certain key functions that you want in a PDA, you should wait, seeing as new models are being released with great frequency. Remember, any device will only be obsolete when it no longer serves any useful function in your life, or you don't get any pleasure out of it.

maybe Sony releases new models every few months because they have realized their customers want variety-- the TG50 is a success except for those that want VG, but some DO want the thumboard. but, if they came out with a VG version first, would we hear from those that wanted a thumboard?

Hey, I want a thumboard. I've used them on a pager, and other devices and find that practically anyone can use them. I think Sony is very smart for releasing a model with a thumboard because it just broadens their market and targets the Blackberry users and other mobile professionals. I'm sure we will see a Hi-Res+ version of the TG50, but I don't think it will be out until June or later.

I'm in total agreement. However, I believe we are in the minority among the Cliesource crowd, hence the uproar over the lack of VG in favor of the thumboard when the first specs on the TG50 were leaked.
