from clieplanet.com:

"Good news on the Memory Stick front- SanDisk has announced that it will be producing MS Pros in 256 MB, 512 MB and 1 GB capacities. They made their announcement at CES 2003 and it can only be useful in driving the prices down to have 2 mahunfacturers out there."

Maybe, I am under the firm belief that SanDisk makes the current Memory Sticks.

More specifically:

"Jointly developed with SanDisk Corporation, the new generation of memory cards features high capacity, high-speed data transfer, high-level security and future expandability."

If SanDisk is teamed up with Sony, I don't see a big price difference. Unless I'm missing something.

All I was saying is if there are more than one producers of MS Pro, then the prices may go down... Just like there are more than 1 companies that manufacture current 128mb MS..

Unfortuantely, Sandisks' prices are about the same as Sony's. But, hopefully that will change after a month or two. I would rather by 4-128's and a MS case instead of paying $200 for a 256MSpro. Yes, it will be a bit more inconvenient but you will get a lot more storage space.

Right, don't mistake sandisk and sony for competitors. However, I thought I saw posted that Lexar has also announced that they'll do MSpro, and *that* might keep sony+sandisk honest.

Lexar will be making them as well...check out www.dpreview.com (a digital camera website) for the Lexar press release...

who are we kidding, the three (Sony, Lexar & Sandisk) of them are in ca-hoots! No real competition there :(

Since Memory Stick & MS Pro are SONY owned products they have to pay a licensing fee to SONY. So the prices are kept in line otherwise SONY would just design them and have others build them. Prices are always controlled the main player.

I am moving to Clie for the fist time and I have (2) MS128 from my sony digital camera so I can afford to wait. But I may just buy a couple 128MB and have a case to carry them in.

I can barely justify paying $100 for a 256mb stick, even if the price comes down i doubt i will ever buy one. PULLING FOR DRIVERS FOR CF!

Not to mention the only reason i see for needing higher mem sticks is for movie playing purposes... and that i can live w/o if necessary.

Enjoy.

yeah, the prices for the mspro really suck. but i was checking out prices of cf, sd and smart media cards and they're all about the same. the newly announced 512meg sd cards will be priced at $400. figure they all have a type of monopoly.

it's just that sony likes to control theirs. there's no way i can justify spending $400 or even $800 for a memory card when the device is sometimes cheaper or even when you consider the price of hard drives dropping in price.

anyway, that's just my .02. nothing meaningful there. i guess it's just life.

I'm not chomping at the bit to get anything larger than 128M. Other than seeing how many MP3s I can carry around, I see little use for that much overhead. I have two 128Ms: one is full with about 33 songs on it. That's enough for me. The other is my main one with all my operating apps and data, plus a full backup of my internal, plus about 80 photos, and I still have 60M free! Nope, can't justify having to have the capacity or the price! :) In this case it's perfectly OK with me if your dog, er . . . uhh MS is bigger than mine!

if you DO want to have more mp3s on your memory stick, just buy an ipod. it'll be cheaper than a 512meg memory stick. doesn't that just sound a bit ridiculous!

when you start comparing what you could get for the cost of these new memory sticks, it just doesn't add up. hmmm, a new digital camera...

How about $100-120 for a 512mb CF card or $60-$70 for a 256mb CF card.

Not quite equal.

Enjoy.

Well. I personally will buy the new NZ70 and 2 1gig memory sticks.

I do a lot of biking and work where I can listen to music all day if I want. So one ms will be strictly for music, and the other can be for movies.

And I love the idea of being able to change the battery in the nz70.

It will cost a lot, but to me it's the best way for me to spend my hard earned money. I thrive on it. It's a total addiction.

I also have 3 128meg ms's, I use for maps, programs, and other things. And I have a 16meg ms for backing up my clie.

I also have a digital camera, which I am going to sell cause ms pro aint backward compatible with it (and it's only 4 months old, D@mn those morons at sony)

They need to have a group counsiling for people like me. How about TTA, Technical Toys Anonymous. :)

Unless you want to use your Clie as a portable movie viewer, who needs the extra space!! I can fit roughly 1 simpsons episode, 15 mp3s and a few pics on a 128. You can also split the movie into 2, save half on one stick and the other half on another stick... dohhhhhhh...

I see the prices coming down fast on the MS Pro. Who wants to pay that $$$$ for a nice to have... Not me.

My opinion
