hi all...
any thoughts/comments on the sandisk memory stick pro? Is this a good memory stick to choose? Approximately how many songs could be held on a 512mb memory stick?
Thanks for any help!

ok....that's no brainer. 512 mb will hold around 115 songs if u ripped ur music at 128bit 4.5 mb each song. yes...they r working good. i don't have the stick pro but i heard they work fine. hope this help.

I have the Sony 1G & Pro, Sony 256 Pro, & San Disk 256. I use the (2) 256 for my Sony Dig Camera. I have noticed that the Sandisk memory stick does capture photos 1-2 seconds slower than the Sony.(No biggie) A slight difference in the speed may be the only difference you'll notice, but you cant miss what you havent had if you havent had either 1. The Sandisk are normally $30-$40 cheaper (thats why I got it)

You said you use your regular SanDisk 256 for the camera, and it is the one that is slow, correct? That might be because it is not a Pro stick itself...
UMichfanMarie: My 1gb sandisk works fine in my TH55, TJ25, and TJ35, never with any problems.

Also as far as songs go (it's been noted by me and others elsewhere in the forum in detail) but if you encode MP3s at a much lower bitrate you really won't notice a difference in sound quality, and you can fit many more on the MS.

All MS above 128 MB are Pros, except those where one has to switch between two 128 MB memory banks, maybe you meant the "Ultra", which according to sandisk has a higher transfer rate.
Anyone here who has benchmarked or compared the Pro Ultra with a normal Pro on a UX50?

I think the following links would indicate otherwise:

Most of the pages claim that the maximum write speed if 1.5mb/s, which I believe is the top speed of a non-Pro memorystick.

oops, so i could use such a 256MB Stick e.g. in my old cam, which hasn't got a pro slot, without any switching? Why these sticks are not mentioned on http://www.memorystick.org/eng/aboutms/family.html?

Hmm... I don't know for sure. I would ask the folks that run memorystick.org for clarification. Also, if you plan on trying to buy one of them, contact the retailers and double check that the sticks WILL work on non-Pro devices. It could turn out that the retailers are mislabeling their webpages, and that I am wrong. Good luck :)

Actually i am planning to buy a 1GB MS and wonder if the so called Ultra, for which Sandisk claims a writing speed of 9 MByte/s, is significantly faster than a "normal" Pro, especially on a UX50.
BTW, nice HP, didn't know that the TH55 has no video recorder, so i sent a link to a friend who recently got this pda :)

I bought a Sandisk 512 memory stick for 170 CAD, thats around 130 USD. It's not bad, BUT for me the max memory of the stick is 470 MB, I hear this is typical though. I always encode cds and high quality songs to 64kbps and get around 240-260 mp3s on the 470mb stick.
PS. I got a very high quality mp3 once, 256kbps and put that and the following on the stick, 196kbps, 164kbps, 128kbps, 96kbps, 80kbps, 64kbps, 32kbps, 24kbps. Off course the 256 sounded the best but the margin between that and 64kbps was almost unnoticeable unless you listened in a very quite room very carefully. Anything 32kbps or less loses sound quality extremely fast so don't use it. 64kbps is the way to go!

I just loked @ the MS & it is a Memory Stick Pro. Like I said, I compared taking phots with both MS & I noticed when it comes to capturing the image, there is a slight differance in speed. The avg. might not even notice it.

Wow!! You encode MP3 @ 64kbps!! I use Musicmatch to encode & always encode @ 128kbps. A while ago, I encoded @ 64kbps & it was a lousy quality.I usually burn MP3 discs for the car, & when I ripped @ a low bitrate, I could hear slight poping noises & distortion. With that said 121mb free on my 1b MS with 98 photos, 10 Mpeg music videos, a backup of my apps, & 117 songs (they take up 476mb of the MS) Its enough for me.

As our guest said, every memory stick above 128 is indeed a pro card. Pro says nothing except that the card is above 128, and has magicgate compatability. Sony included a 128 limit in older devices to make them simpler to use with the cards. It is simply what we call a "standard".
The Lexar 256 in the pics can either be a pro, or a memory stick select card, which has two 128 modules, which can be switched by a switch on the back of the card. I bought one of these, because I could get it cheap off of buy.com. That was a mistake! The card was crummy, and would work sporadically, often corrupting and forcing me to reformat it. I have since bought a Sandisk 256 Pro card, and it has never failed me.
