Hi

I just bought the NX60, and also a Sony Wifi Card.
I have broadband cable modem at home.
I also bought the Linksys Access point. 802.11b

My idea was to hook the Linksys up to my Desktop, so that I could use the internet on my new NX60 around the house watching TV, in bed, etc...

The thing I think I just realized I forgot is....
I need to buy some sort of Wifi card for my desktop? Is that right?

For some reason I though the desktop would just stay hardwired, and only the PDA would use the signal. But it seems both will need it because there is only one output on the cable modem.

Do I need to get a better modem with second output (1 hard wired, one to go to the access point), or do I need to set up my CPU with some wifi card too?

I think you just need a wireless router and a Wi-Fi card. Here is how I hook mine up:
1. Cable modem is connected to the wireless router (D-Link DI-614+) via ethernet cable.
2. One PC, next to the modem, is hardwired to the router via ethernet cable.  The router has a buit-in 4 ethernet (LAN) connections.
3. Another PC, upstairs, is connected wirelessly to the router via PCI Wi-Fi adapter (D-Link DWL-520+).
4. One laptop is connected wirelessly to the router via PCMCIA Wi-Fi card (D-Link DWL-650+).

The laptop connection may be what you want to imitate.

thank you Dan
Very helpful

I think the problem is my new Linksys router access point, only has 1 spot for a ethernet cable. Sounds like I should take it back for something with more plug holes. Yours has 4! It seems I should just be able to hook it up directly to the CPU like you did.

sounds like you have an WiFi Access point, which is just a part of a WiFi router.

Your WiFi AP is meant to be plugged into a router t give the network a wireless capability. Dan has a router that has an access point built into it, that's all.

Since you already have a WiFi AP, all you need is a standard router. Something like LinkSys BEFSR41. You plug your cable modem, desktop PC, and the WiFi AP all to the router and everything should be connected.

If you can return the wireless AP for exchange with another LinkSys product, you can get BEFW11S4 wireless router which is similar to D-Link DI-614+. This way you just have one unit instead of two (wireless AP and wired router). It also saves you an ethernet cable (using 2 cable instead of 3).

Right, you need the combo unit, that has wireless plus wired Ethernet. Then you should add an Ethernet card in your Desktop PC if it doesn't have one. A lot of new PC's now come with a Ethernet connection.

The cable modem will plug into the combo unit, then it's hardwired plugged into your desktop via a CAT5 cable with RJ45 plugs on it's ends. The clie would then use the built-in wireless access point.
