View Full Version : Planning to hard reset--Any advice?

Hi all. I have an NX80V, which I've had for several months. It wasn't until a couple of months ago that I installed "Uninstall" onto it. Prior to that I had tried out and deleted many programs, each of which l(I'm sure) left their bits and pieces on my NX. I've been thinking about housekeeping by hard resetting for some time. The final incentive was that I can no longer get video to play from the CF card. Well, it plays, but VEEERRRRYY SSSLLOOOWWLLYY. (I first noted this after I tried to move Pelaca's Drivers to Flash memory by renaming, renumbering them. I have since restored them to RAM, just as before, so I don't know if this is the problem or not.)

Anyway, I hope to clean up my memory, get the CF movieplayer driver working properly, and if I happen to have my trial period restored on a shareware program or two, that would be a bonus. Am I crazy for wanting to hard reset? I plan to:
1. MSBackup
2. Hotsync
3. Rename the Backup folder on my desktop
4. Hard reset
5. Hotsync
6. Install "Uninstall"
7. Install my other applications from scratch

My questions are: Is this a good idea, and is there anything else I should know? How does re-installing Jackflash work, when there are already programs in Flash? For those programs that have their application files in flash and their DB's in RAM, what's the best way to reinstall them? What about apps that run from MS (such as warfare), do they have files in RAM that will make re-installing them necessary too?

Any help is appreciated. This forum is the greatest!

I was gonna tell you the first thing you should install on you clean NX80 should be Uninstall Manager. But you've got that down. Smart. ;)

The hard reset and reinstall will probably be worth the effort. If you aren't using an uninstaller and try a lot of demos, you probably have a lot of leftover stuff hanging around tying up memory.
As for apps on the memory stick, this question depends on a couple things.
How did you get the app to the ms? Did you move it with ZLauncher, or put it in the Palm/Launcher directory with FileZ or something similar. If you moved it with ZLauncher, the files that it needs should have moved with it. The only thing you might have to do is reenter your license codes. If you moved it with FileZ, not all the needed files might have gone with them.

Sounds like you have the bases covered. Just make sure you have all of your activation/registration codes handy. SplashID is great for that sort of thing.

Starbuckk, I am talking about applications that I install directly to MS at hotsync. (I don't have ZL yet.)

HHerbzilla. I just discovered Napoleon yesterday. Before that, I thought your avatar was a less-flattering picture of you. :)

I was considering asking a similar question. Re-naming the backup folder was something I thought to do, that worked well, transferring back my memos, todo's and the odd game save worked well. I hotsync'd and then copied the files into the new hotsync diectory [program files > hotsync name] before hotsyncing again.

M8rk,
What files did you copy into the new hotsync directory, and what did it do for you? I'm trying to understand...

quoting m8rk:

Well, it sounds like nobody thinks I'm crazy for wanting to hard reset to cleanup. I still have a few unanswered questions (see original post). Has anyone had a bad experience with hard resetting?

I have hard reset my NX80V many times. Regarding JackFlash, a hard reset does not erase the items in flash. You will need a copy of JackFlash in the \Palm\Launcher directory of your memory stick to access them again - be sure to have your registration code handy!

Otherwise - the best defense against superfluous build-up of files when experimenting with app demos and such is to backup before each trial program. That way you can simply restore your device to the state it was in before the demo app you decided to try was installed.

Sorry Cliemia - missed your post. I copied over to the new profile the memopad.dat, todo.dat and adress.dat which recovered all my previous entries in those applications.

Thank you both m8rk and 21stcentury mac! This has been quite helpful. I'll let you know how things go.

Another post I just made reminded me of this thread. If anyone is curious, I had some good success with my hard reset cleanup. I had expected to recover maybe a couple hundred Kbytes. To my suprise, the cleaned-up Clie has an extra 3.5 MB of RAM! (the flash is about the same as before.) I did leave out 1 or 2 small apps that I never used, but I am still scratching my head, wondering if I left out something important. However, I haven't noticed anything different in using my Clie, (except the extra memory), and my pre- and post-reset app lists match up. I was very pleasantly surprised!

I also did a hard reset and re-install recently - and I also have a bunch of extra memory now. BUT - I didn't load up the CF patches and the patched files as I never really used the CF card.
Did you re-install all the Clie patches and updates?

I did load the CF patches (Pelaca's). No other updates. Are there some that I should?
