Maybe I'm missing something, but has anyone had any luck playing non native movies on the NX90? I can record movies fine and those playback, but Quicktime and even the "dog.mpg" file that came as demo on the CD don't appear in the movie player under either format. These files are location in the same directory on the MS as the ones recorded by the Movie Rec program

I would love to know the answer to this one.

The only non-native movie that I have succeeded in playing on the NZ is the one I took with my Sony DSC U20 camera. Other mpeg movies, even if I placed them in the same folder used by the camera, would not play.

Then why on this green earth would they include 2 .mpg files as movies.. so that you can enjoy the time waiting thru ImageConvert to get them into playable movies ?? Joy.
I'm converting South Park episodes from DVD into 22mb or 44mb files to store on the Palm. Such fun to watch.

Watch the fine print in the specs, especially when it comes to the CF slot, file compatibility, and video out features...
As pointed out in the manual, the MPEG playback is ONLY for movies taken by other SONY brand cameras (eg: Cyber-shot or Handycam)
As you know, it will only see files in certain folders
[see the online web manual page titled 'About files stored on “Memory Stick” media' - it lists the folders it uses]

I suspect if you figured out what MPEG compression settings they use in the Cyber-shot or Handycam, you could convert you own movies -- but why bother ?
Use the provided Image Converter program (which converts them and stores them on memory stick in the MQV format)
Setup a batch conversion (and store the results on the hard drive) and go to lunch.

re: sample .mpg files on the disk
I believe they are samples for use with Image Converter, convert them and store them on a memory stick.

If you want to play back native .MPG files, they can't go in the same directory as the movies converted by the Image Converter. They need to go in /MSSONY/MOML0001/. The files also must be renamed MOV0****.MPG where the *=any number. This doesn't work for all .MPG files. But it did work for the dog and dolphin demos on my NX.

Native and Converted mpegs work fine on my NX so should in theory be the same for the NZ. The converted file needs to be 15.5fps mpeg4. It should end up in the /MQ_ROOT/100MQV01 directory. File should be named MOV0000X.MQV x should be a number.
If you move a file natively it should play as well. Those should be in the /DCIM/100MSDCF directory. I forget the filemask because I deleted the one that was on my machine.
If you are trying to convert from a DVD I recommend not using a DIVX encoded file but ripping the vob to avi or mpeg.
I've got gobs of trailers I d/l right from the apple site and they play fine. All the Matrix trailers high quality :)

OK I got the "dog" moive to play, but I still believe that quicktime movies should play in their native format.
Here's why

if Quicktime format movies don't play why the reference to quicktime on the Clie box?

Neither the box or the instructions say that you can play files nativley. The Image Converter handles QuickTime files just fine.

Wait, I just noticed it does say: "Picture/Movie Format: JPEG (DCF), Movie Player Format, MPEG movie (playback only)"

Why take all this time an effort to provide info without providing any links to the information you reference?

It's in the manual on the CD that comes with the Clie.

As cpulock mentions, you need the install CD
[feel free to notice the irony of not having the explicit path of the file that describes all the explicit paths...]

Ok, for those that don't want to spend too much time fishing :->
file://X:\Manuals\CLIE_application_manual\00_nav\nav_mst.html
Replace "X" with the drive letter of your CDROM. Be sure the CLIE NZ90 CD is in the drive
Assuming your install CD is the same as mine.

To all: Am not too sure if you guys have tried this. I'd recorded a short video file on the NZ90. I then put it in the cradle and use MS Import to my PC. I then use windows explorer to copy the video file out onto my PC and just use Quicktime to play it, thereafter I use QUicktime to save it as a self-contained video file.
I think the NZ90's ability to do all these stuff all at the same time is value enough for me.
