I stared this thread under the Accessories Forum, but thought I’d bring it over here for discussion as related to the NX.

I bought the Sandisk 6 in 1 and it doesn't recognise NX70 formatted memory sticks.
If I mount a 128 Memory stick formated in my Sony Cyber-shot camera, it reads the stick just fine.
However, as soon as I put that same stick into my NX70 and it has those Clie related directories added, I get the message, "drive not formatted, would you like to format?"

I've played around a few times with Sony, Lexar and SanDisk memory sticks and always encounter the same thing.
I tried to be pretty exhaustive in my testing :
1) format Sony 128Mb stick in camera - readable by 6-in-1
2) format Sony 128Mb stick in NX - unreadable by 6-in-1
3) format Sony 128Mb stick in camera- readable by 6-in-1, mount same stick in NX, Palm directories added, stick becomes unreadable by 6-in-1.
Repeat steps 1-3 for Lexar 128Mb, SanDisk 128Mb and Sony 16Mb memory sticks, all with the same results.
memory stick formatted in camera - able to read
after same memory stick put in NX70 - unable to read.

The response from SanDisk support read, ‘That particular issue seems to be caused by the Sony NX70. SanDisk does not have any known issues with these two devices. I would suggest contact Sony, then verify if they have any known issues and for further support.’

Anyone else with this problem or a similar problem on other readers?

I have the exact same problem with you, but I am using the Eagle Tec Multi Flash PCMCIA adapter, except that it had been working fine for a while...even when I was using my N760 until I started using NX70V, for like 2 months... the device started failing me.. so now I can only use MS IMPORT from my usb cradel

the interesting thing is, if i formatted the MS under windows, it works fine with other computers, just not with my NX70..

This NX70 patch available here (http://www.ita.sel.sony.com/support/clie/nx70v/softupdates/), provides the following enhancements:

- Compatibility with external Memory Stick® Adapters for Memory Stick® media that was formatted with an PEG-NXxx device
- Improves low battery issues with the Communications Card
- Improves Communications Card recognition
- Improves ATRAC3™ Audio sound quality
- Improves power-up issues involving Memory Stick® media and the Communications Card.
- Improves MP3 playback for 96kbps encoded MP3 files

Sounds exactly like the fix for your problem.
Remember, search is your friend.

FWIW - I use a Lexar 128MB "bling bling" MS card (formatted in my NX70), along with a PQI USB2.0 6in1 reader under W2K, and all works well.

*bonk* *bonk* *bonk*
<lift's head from dent in desk long enough to type...>

And here I am muttering under my breath every other time I read someone's post that can be solved by a search, let alone a search on the product's support site...

My humble thanks....

so Nemius, did it work for you after applying the patch?
cuz I had installed the patch the day it came out, but its still not working for me ><

After installing the patch, I am able to access the cards, but only *new* data on those cards.
Any old pictures, WAVs or even MP3's that were on a card before installing the update are inaccessable e.g. program directories do not show up nor do picture directories.
However, if I take a new picture, the new picutre and all the old picuture files show up in under the directory, but only the new picture is viewable, trying to access an old picture hangs the XP viewer!

At least I am a few steps further ahead than I was yesterday.

Thanks, all.

I have the same problem, but haven't installed the patch. I was under the impression that you had to have the special scsi driver installed on your PC to view the contents of memory sticks in Windows and then only when the stick was in the Clie and the Clie connected to the PC. On my old N710, that's also the way it worked. If this patch makes the Clie formatted memory sticks directly FAT32 compatible, that'd be great. I don't understand how it could, but I'm not a programmer. Is the patch for the Clie or is it for the PC?

Better luck than me. Patch made no difference. Only having problems with MS on this device, not SD. I reformated using a different card reader (then also on the palm after patch). Error writing and accessing this still and even another MS. I have heard this card reader is a nightmare. Even the CC salesman told me that they have had problems. I am past return period so I will suck it up and order another brand. BTW I have tried two different Sandisk 6 in 1 b/c I thought mine was broken. Both repeated the same poor performance. VERY DISAPPOINTED!!!!

I use a dazzle, I guess it reads 3 or four types of cards, and I have no problem, I am using WinXP, the NX, and I have not installed the update from sony.

FAT32 can only be applied to volumes larger than 512mb.

I formatted the MS in my clie and that's where it should be done. Second choice would be my camera, but I can't tell you why, it just is;)!

Now I have two XP Sony PC's, a desktop and laptop, with MS readers built-in, the memory stick works fine, with no issues. Additionally, I have a Sony PCMCIA adapter in my Dell laptop, no issues there either with running Windows ME. Sorry, I don't buy the NX incompatibility issue. I did the upgrade, but I found no differences and it worked fine before that.

(using nx70 and windows 2000) i was even considering buying the sandisk reader for my second pc, i just like the look of it, but i guess i will be heading back to e-bay, it never fails me

WOW, and I lamost bought a 6 in 1 and NOT upgraded my NX70.

I just recently upgraded.

HEY UNreg... how much did YOU find that 6 in 1 on ebay for?

When I travel I find PCMCIA adapters great ways to back up files on a TiPB

I was having the same problem with a Dazzle 6in1. Went as far as to RMA the Lexar MS.

After reading your post I check for an update from Dazzle.

FWIW - The PQI USB2.0 6in1 reader that I have is really plug and play. Didn't need to install drivers under W2K at all - it was automagically recognised as external USB removable media (and created multiple drives when plugged in).

I formatted my Lexar 128MB in my NX70V. Files transfer without a problem.

I actually applied the NX patch to improve the Communication Slot performance, rather than the MS fix, and am yet to have any issues.

Token.

I use a Sandisk 2-in-1 reader (CF/MS) on a WinXP machine with no problems. I can see all files on both Memory Sticks that I have; the first one was formatted by a N710, and the second one by the NX.

I will call Sandisk back and tell them about the dazzle solution. Since they do not think they have a problem. I would suggest every other Sandisk 6 in 1 owner do the same. You can get these things for 29.99 with a 20 rebate online. But it is ten dollars wasted if it never works with MS.

I had the same problem.

1. Install the memory stick format problem fix
2. Use MS Export to move all my files off the memory stick to my PC.
3. Format the memory stick in the Clie using the same label.
4. Move all the files back to the memory stick with MS Export.

Now my card works in the Clie and in the adaptor.

Do you mean that you used MS Import on the clie?
