View Full Version : I managed to play MP4 files on UX50 !!

It is possible to play MP4 files on other CLIE than the VZ90!!

You need the Codecs:
Codecs (http://www.lmame-bug.com/vz/codecsmedia.zip)

You need the Media launcher (video and audio player):
Media Launcher (http://www.lmame-bug.com/vz/media.zip)

To encode files in MP4 format, you have to get IC2, it is here:
http://www.1src.com/forums/showthread.php?t=69393

Put all data from two zips in one directory on a MS and copy all of it to RAM with McFile (it should fail if you do it with Clie Files or Filez).

Then, you should "un hidden" the video application:
Go on Filez and search for "MediaLMovie", go on details and uncheck the "hidden" property.
Now an icon appears just for the Media Movie (new one).
http://www.lmame-bug.com/vz/ml_01.jpg

You got a combo who makes you choose the type of movie you want to see:
http://www.lmame-bug.com/vz/ml_02.jpg
http://www.lmame-bug.com/vz/ml_03.jpg

Now enjoy MP4 files on your CLIE ;)

Edit 09/10/2004:
Some people seems to have some trouble to copy some of the files in RAM with McFile, I use Mcfile 2.2 beta 3 and it's working:
Mc File 2.2beta 3 (http://www.lmame-bug.com/McFL22Beta3.zip)

Edit 2: 09/10/2004:
Instead of installing Media Launcher, you can simply install the Full Movie Player (http://aibohack.com/clie/fullmovie.htm) from CliePet, which is better and different, as it is full screen (for 480x320 movies, and without bars for other dimensions.) ;)
It is lighter too :)
And you got the 1src link (http://www.1src.com/forums/showthread.php?t=70005).

Edit 3: 09/10/2004:
It seems that you don't need to copy all files from the "codecs.zip" to read MP4 files, these files are necessary:
Avx Analyzer
Avx Code
Avx DSPSink
Avx MP4Parser
Avx MPEG4Decoder

lmame

One thing, MP4 files have to be named like:
M4V0000X.MP4 (like M4V00008.MP4 for example)

and to be placed on the MS in this directory:
MP_ROOT\100MNV01

For example, this file is MP4:
M4V00008.zip (http://www.lmame-bug.com/vz/M4V00008.zip)
Unzip it and place both files on a MS, directory "MP_ROOT\100MNV01".

Edit:
Gep from the UX forum found a trick to install using Zlauncher in this thread:
http://www.1src.com/forums/showthread.php?p=720787&posted=1#post720787
just tried the media center and it works perfectly!!! :)

that's great, thanks a lot Imame!!!

ah, for those who use Zlaucher, it is really simple to install everything:
just copy all files and codecs into the memory stick (in a directory named, for example, /PALM/Programs/Zlauncher/Apps/MediaCenter) and then browse into this directory, find the "Media Launcher" app and create a shortcut.
that's it!!!

Had you tried to play those MP4? Few days ago when I was trying it on my NZ, it just can list MP4 files but can't play.

MediaLauncher can just "run" w/o any Avx libraries. Avx libraries only related if you play music or video.

BTW, thanks for your IC 2 but is it incomplete? I can't find the EXE program file after installed IC 2...

And, it should be not working on non-HHE CLIEs... So my NZ should not work. But of course, I will try again.

You can run Media center without codecs, and even play MQV files, but not MP4 (I speak on a Clie UX).

It is normal if you install IC2 on a "not" Japanese OS, see this thread, I put all the necesseray files and a how to install:

I'm working on registries of IC 2. They are little bit complicated. Maybe it take a long time to re-write ICPrefs. If I wrote it, can you help me to test it? Because not much people have VZ90 for playback test.

BTW, did you try to install CLIE 3D Launcher to VZ90? It should be interesting if you use CLIE Launcher, not other 3rd party launchers...

How about the Clie Organizer of VZ90 put into UX50? Will it be portrait on UX50 ?

lmame

I'll try both of it :)

EDIT:
I tried Clie 3D launcher from UX on the VZ, I had to perform a hard reset :D
If someone knows what files are needed for the 3D launcher, please tell me, thanks ;)

For the record the UX50 (or any CLIE that supports the QuickTime MQV files) already plays MPEG-4 video and audio - built in.
The MQV files are a quicktime wrapping of MPEG-4 video/audio streams.

The new .MP4 file format is a different outer packaging, different codec compression options.

A lot of this is based on movie formats used by SONY digital movie cameras (which also explains why they have to be in very specific formats and in strange named folders). If they wanted to support a more general format, they'd pick DivX - but that's not their goal (Sony sells hardware).

Looks like the new Image Converter makes some things easier (than the older V1)

> How about the Clie Organizer of VZ90 put into UX50? Will it be portrait on UX50 ?

The portrait mode of the Organizer relies on a new set of system services, that are only on the VZ90 (the entire system is switched, including the status bar, making the VZ90 act like a portrait PDA like the TH55)

You may have some luck installing the new Organizer (Japanese UI) on the TH55, but that's not very interesting.

> I tried and Clie Organizer remains in portrait on the UX...

I assume you mean the organizer is not rotated.
The UX 50 stays in landscape mode but Organizer draws itself normally (filling the 320x320 left hand part of the screen)

[ie. programs always run in the natural orientation of the PDA - landscape on the UX50, portrait on the TH55 -- when a PDA supports rotation it is more interesting -- like the VZ90, T3 or Tapwave Zodiac]

I don't think VZ supports really rotation... It seems it is slower than in "normal" mode...
I saw some files on the VZ ROM about "rotation", but when I tried to put them in the UX, I crashed it...

So I guess this is only a "calculated" rotation, as the T3, not hardware, and clie organizer is the only one to use it...

a tip for ZLauncher users:

just copy media center and codecs files to one directory in your memory stick (for example /MS/Palm/Programs/ZLauncher/Apps/MediaCenter) then browse until you find the MediaCenter app and create a shortcut.
that's it!! :)

little update

for more stability, it's better to move the following 3 files in RAM:
Avx Core
Avx DbgSetup
Avx SAL

(use ZLauncher and chose "move to RAM" option)

Great Job! :) I appriciate your great effort ;)

So... by installing the media launcher and the codecs, ux50/40 also can play MP4 files created by the IC2, am I correct? even the highest quality settings? (768kbps)??

Thanks in Advance!

thanks again Imame, for the files.
That means I'll have to try them out tonight, & can't wait to test out MP4 playback with the new look of the MediaCenter. I'm feeling so excited! ;)

Well, something attractive got my attention here! ;)
I like the MP4 IC2 converter, so IC2 only generates MP4 files? Are we saying good bye to the *.MQV files?
Also I can't seem to make thumbnails for the MP4 files, it's stuck for some reason.
According to MediaCenter, it says that thumbnails are allowed for MP4 & MQV files, only not for MPG files.

These files do take up lots of RAM though. Or I might try to use ZLauncher tomorrow when I have time. :)

I'm not for sure but it seems MP4 files created by IC2 are regular MP4 format?? Can you play MP4 files created by other software??

As I know that IC2 still generates .MAI file, but the path should be /PALM/PROGRAMS/MoviePlayer/100MNV01. That should be thumbnail file. But I'm not sure what .THM file should be.

lmame

Where did you find .THM file?

When I generate the movies with IC2, I say IC2 to generate on the hard disk, not on MS, so it generates me a:
MOV00004.MP4 and a MOV00004.THM
It seems a Jpeg is encoded in the .THM file, but if I put it in the same directory (on MS) that the MP4 I got no "thumbnail", if I put it in /PALM/PROGRAMS/MoviePlayer/100MNV01 I got no preview...
Same thing if I rename .THM in .MAI...
In fact, if I rename it in, .MAI, the file gets deleted and replaced by a new .MAI (the size changed), but no preview...

IC2 generates a .MP4, a .THM in same directory:

AND a .MAI in directory:
PALM\PROGRAMS\MoviePlayer\100MNV01

even on hard disk...

I copied the .MAI file to PALM\PROGRAMS\MoviePlayer\100MNV01 & made sure the *.MAI file name matches the same as the *.MP4 name, now I got the JPEG thumbnail & all the details (bitrate, filesize, etc.). Cool! :D

Great scot. It works. Thanks a bunch.

Noticed something though (didn't try to reproduce). I'm using Appshelf, and when I move the MovieLaunch icon to another category, ML reverts back to old audio player. I couldn't do anything about it, and then when I started deleting stuff like a mad mother, I ended up hard resetting. No biggie.

But I'm wondering if this is going to be a problem. I've since re-installed, but have left the icon at "Unfiled".

I don't know, tke918. I think you are making things up.
Have done a lot of studies concerning that matter. Xvid even in Single pass mode producing kind of VBR. I am able to create Xvid MP4 file, and it plays in Quicktime, but not in my Clie UX.

So I guess we have to stick with IC2.0

According to MediaLauncher, the user could manually update the thumbnails on *.MQV files & *.MP4 files.

Just curious if there were any *.prc files left out?

I am absolutely, positively giving up on the MP4 files. I have used McFile, Filez, and Clie files. None work. We Clie users are somewhat greedy. Our pdas can already do more mediawise than any other Palm PDA. We are scuffling over which type of MPEG 4 files we can use, when T5 users are happy they can play MPEG files at all.

This is all very nice. Good development for Clie owners. But...
What is the advantage of MP4 files ?
I can't understand this. We are already able to play a standard divx file with MMplayer. Then why do we need to play MP4 files of Sony ?

Btw, do you know why MP4 does not play on NX/NZ ?

For several reasons:
1°) Image Converter 2 (generates MP4) is faster than Image Converter 1.1 for the same file size and same quality and accepts DivX with MP3 audio,
2°) It seems it use DSP on the CLIE, so video is smooth and beautiful,
3°) MMPlayer is slow like hell and does not give a good quality on a UX for example,

asiliat

I love IC2. It takes almost any file formats I've thrown at it, and converted lickity split. I was going the MMPlayer route, but it's still buggy IMHO and I much rather not. And since I'd have to re-encode the divx file to something small enuf to fit in the ux anyway, I might as well batch encode simply w/ IC2.

mmplayer was a decent alternative, but I'm sold on IC2.

I capture a lot of music videos and put them on my clie.

There is a simple 'Flip' menu option. It is not perfect but may work for your videos [try the different scale factors too]
By default movies are played back in the natural 320x240 orientation [landscape on UX/VZ, portrait on TH/NX/NZ]

I heard that for mp4 movies you could install the avx core file to the ram, and the rest of the needed files could be run off of the memorystick using zlauncher. Is this true, and does anyone know how to complete this operation if possible.

Strange... Try with filez or Zlauncher then...
Could you try to do a soft reset and retry with Mc File?

If all else fails, make a card backup, stick the files in it, and hard reset your device, then restore the backup.

Many thanks. Avx core is installed and FMP is working fine. I have installed IC2 on Dutch Windows XP with SP2 and after uncompleted installation I used the backup-files to complete the IC2 install.

IC2 stars up, but it will not add any movie. Is it because it will not work on Dutch XP, or is there something else? All idea's are very much appreciated. Please help.

Drag and drop in the left part fails?
What kind of files did you try to convert?

Like lmame said, what files you tried maybe the problem. Try to use standard MPEG-1 for testing (like sample video from old IC 1.0 or 1.1) first.

If it is really XP's language problem, try to use Applocale. It lets you to run specific program in other language setting. You can specify IC 2 to run in Japanese environment.

You can d/l it from MS web site.

Hi,

not so clear with the mediacodecs and how to transfer using Mc file please help if someone can explain to me I will appreciate it :) .Make a backup file, delete everything in it (not the file itself), and then put the codecs in it. Restore the file (NOT after a hard reset, no reset required), and you should have the codecs. Alternately, if you have ZLauncher, use that to transfer the files onto your handheld. Once you have the codecs, you need FullMoviePlayer (available at www.Aibohack.com, under the Clie section) to play the files.

Ok I installed of the codecs to the ram of my ux-50, and when i try to play a mpg4 clip encoded with Image Converter 2.1 from my computer, it still says unsupported format. Am i missing something. Oh, and i used ZLauncher to move them to RAM.

Thanks,

I actually mispoke a little. No hard reset is required, but after installing the codecs, you have to do a soft reset before they are recognized.

One thing, MP4 files have to be named like:
M4V0000X.MP4 (like M4V00008.MP4 for example)

and to be placed on the MS in this directory:
MP_ROOT\100MNV01

For example, this file is MP4:
M4V00008.zip (http://www.lmame-bug.com/vz/M4V00008.zip)
Unzip it and place both files on a MS, directory "MP_ROOT\100MNV01".

Could you please explain where EXACTLY on the MemoryStick you are creating the MP_ROOT\100MNV01 directory? For example, do I create this directory in ANOTHER folder?

I ask because when I go to create this directory on my MS using the latest beta version of McFile, I get the following error message:

Returned from
VFSFileCreate when the path
leading up to the file
does not exist

What am I doing wrong??

BTW, I have the newest version of FullMoviePlayer installed, and I have all the codecs in RAM.

Thanks. ;)

In the first post of this thread, you got a link to a "codecs"... Download this zip files, and you will have all the codecs...
This thread tells you what files are needed:

The path MP_ROOT\100MNV01 is the exact path... from the MS root, I can't tell you anything more clear
Try to create the directories, one at a time, and perhaps with another file manager (Clie Files or Filez)...
By the way, it is TWO directories, MP_ROOT\100MNV01
100MNV01 is a sub-directory of MP_ROOT

Got it. Thanks. Fixed. Problem was I was trying to create the folder with this WHOLE name: MP_ROOT\100MNV01 at once. Silly me..I took you literally and tried to create it all at once.

When I went back and tried it with JUST this: MP_ROOT it worked fine. I THEN went into the MP_ROOT folder and created the 100MNV01 SUBfolder.

Still can't play this MP4 file I got off a PSP site though. Altough FMPlayer can see it, I get a Shared Library Missing error every time I try and play it, then I have to Reset. :(

ok all..... time to resurrect this for a numpty here....

I have:

A TH55
FMP
ZLauncher (just installed last night so don't know my way around it, so type slowly !)
the codecs

i tried to hotsync the codecs across - they now appear under the file thingy in zlauncher, i then tried to copy those files to ram... ok, i'll level with you guys here, i'm not really sure what i'm doing... the upshot of this is that fmp crashes when trying to open a file - even MQVs

anyone want to talk this numpty through it one more time for old times sakes?

many thanks in advance....

Remember now, I never actually was able to get this working on my TH55. But one thing I know FOR SURE is you weren't supposed to HotSync any of the codecs over...you were supposed to use the PC Link to move them over to the MS, THEN copy or move them over to RAM.

Just transfer the three files to ram using ZLauncher, and it should work. I have done many hard resets, and all I have to do is transfer the files from my expansion card with ZLauncher, do a soft reset, and I am good to go.

well guys i think i have to give it up now, pretty sure i tried everything:

started with a hard reset and cleared out *everything*

installed zlaunch and fmv

copied the codecs to memory stick

zlaunched the files from MS to RAM

now i got excited at this point as both FMV and movie player still played the old format of film (they didn't previously when more codecs had been copied)

i copied over an mp4

alas FMV showed the MP4 location and filename but on clicking it reported an unsupported file format...

so thats me pretty much out of ideas... many thanks all for your help tho.

No, they are essentially the same core hardware.

The 768kbps limit is artificial (in software). Check the TH55 forum for a simple codec patch to remove the limit.
For some reason they took out some features that they shouldn't have (eg: movie recorder)

Edit 09/10/2004:
Some people seems to have some trouble to copy some of the files in RAM with McFile, I use Mcfile 2.2 beta 3 and it's working:
Mc File 2.2beta 3 (http://www.lmame-bug.com/McFL22Beta3.zip)

<snip>

Edit 3: 09/10/2004:
It seems that you don't need to copy all files from the "codecs.zip" to read MP4 files, these files are necessary:
Avx Analyzer
Avx Code (Actually it's Avx Core)
Avx DSPSink
Avx MP4Parser
Avx MPEG4Decoder

Here is a tip for anyone who's having trouble with McFile: You don't need to use McFile to install the codecs, you can use the the standard MSBackup instead.

Just make a backup of your memory, then copy the above files into the backup directory of your Memory Stick. Restore and... Voila! The codecs are installed :-)

Hope that helps!
