Hey Everyone. And kudos to a consistently excellent one stop site!
I'm a little confused about the MS Backup Feature. I have gone thru a couple of Fatal Crash/loop problems.
I had'nt used the MS Backup feature as i had only aquired my NR70. these crashes occured during or directly after a Hot sync. According to the MS backup Description it will back up
files so you can restore them after a hard Reset. However when you go to sync up after the restore, won't the hotsync 'cue' simply try to Reinstall the offending hardware that caused the crash in the first place? or does it recognise the programs have been reinstalled and not attempt to sync the software that previously caused the crash. when my Palm crashed before & i had to do a hard Reset, when i went to sync again, it proceeded to load up the offending software again, forcing another hard reset loop. i ended up having to
change my user name on the Desktop software so i could start from scratch. If anyone could clear this up i would be very grateful and wouldn't fear the "Fatal Error" screen so much.
thanks

Backup software has no clue as to which program is the offending one. Once you get into a loop like that, the only thing you can do is a warm reset (hold the up button while hitting the reset pin). Then one by one removing a program and trying a normal reset. If the normal reset does not work, then you need to go back to the warm reset and delete another one. Once you find the offending program, delete it from the MS and your Palm Desktop backup, so that it does not get reinstalled.

Here's a little trick. Go to <drive>:\Program Files\Sony Handheld\<user name>\Backup. This directory is what will be reinstalled if you hotsync after a hard reset. Simply delete the offending files from this directory. Hotsync and everything else is restored.

Thanks Alistar, This is the File I was looking for. When you bring up the Hotsync Log details from the TaskBar you can see the Offending Prog but can't delete it. This is where to go. I also bought a 6 in 1 Card reader recently and now I do a MS Backup, Slot in the MS to Reader, Copy the Files to my Backup-Backup Folder on Desktop. that way I can easily do a Selective Restore form Desktop after getting rid of Problem Software. Its good to have a Backup of yer Backup! :-) Q
