It's winter and I was wondering. Seem I might have a problem as the time and date keep going to the default when I bought it. Hmmm....

I have zapped mine a few times with static electricity but have not seen any affect from it on my N760.

I have zapped my N760 several times this Winter. When it is sitting in the cradle I have it set to stay on. Most of the time when I reach to take it out I get a little spark from my fingers. This usually ends up making the backlight go off and it freezes. I do a soft reset and everything works again. No long-term damage that I can tell.

So it does have short term consequences and possibly long-term. Any others with some insght to add. Thanks Gizmo and Pman:)

Have you ever noticed how static electricity and electronic devices are never a good combination? :)

well, Gizmo-- have you ever noticed how electronics and ungrounded power lines are never a good combination?

BE CAREFUL!!!

I've been ZAPPED with my NX70 in my pocket, sure I am concerned but so far so good.

It shouldnt make a difference if its shocked with static, there should be no metal connectors touching the case at all. And the screen doesnt seem like it conductrs electricity. It things happend when you shock it its a flaw in design.

Just like the Canon Powershot Digital ELPH had a model where it would actually shock its user because the electronics were touching the metal case. The camera got recalled. Im guessing if there were a metal connector the clie would actually shock you if there was enough power in it. (theres not)

Get a battery tester and try to see if theres any electric charge in the casing.

I don't know about clie with static, but I had an bad experience with my old Handspring Visor Platinum.

I was dressed up in a pure wool suit to help out my friend's wedding. I arrive her appartment's foyer, covered with carpet. After I walk in for 10 meters, I heard my Visor producing the booting beeping. I was unaware of the seriousness of it. After finishing help out at her appartment, I walk back out in the same way......got rebooted the second time....

After the whole day finish, I take out my Visor to check for damage. I realise the screen have irregular black spot on it, and there is no respone on the touch screen. I have tried to soft rest a few times, and hard reset a few times....still doesn't work. Handspring suggest me do a "power down reset"...which basically is remove the battery for 1day, and pressing the reset button a few times before putting in new battery...

My Visor do survive, but after that it always hang with no reason...And now is finally RIP because I drop it on the ground 1 week later...Now I am waiting for my pre-order TG-50 to be delievered (HKG release on 20 March)

I have a polyester coat and almost anything electronic I carry in the pocket gets a static crash inlcuding my MP3 player and Visor Neo. When I bought the SJ20 I didn't want that to happen so I bought a small zippered camera case that fits the SJ20 and lined it with an anti-static bag that circuit boards come packed in. I haven't experienced a static crash yet.

I've had my N760 shocked numerous times just this year. They are usually harmless but just a week or so ago after I touched my clie and had the usual zap, to my horror the clie did a hard reset.

I hadn't backed up my clie in about a month or so either. So although they are normally ok, be careful!

I'm trying to get this straight here, but I'm shocking my device, it is not the origin of the shock, it is my feet on the carpet and the cold dry weather.

I wonder how big of a problem static electricity is as a whole for these devices.

Yeah but the actual electronics shouldnt be affected. Only the case should take the electricity.

I always put my clie in an inside coat pocket, run the remote wire down my sleeve to my hand and run the earphone wire back up my sleeve to my ears when I am walking with it. One time I was putting on my coat and there was a LOT of static sparks going on. I heard a loud crackling in my earphones. Later I noticed there was a rather loud and annoying buzz in the background. It was like that for a while than it went back to normal for whatever reason.

For whatever reason the effects of static electricity are very little and don't last long... Maybe Sony has come up with regenerating electronics
