View Full Version : Separate Launcher forum - good idea or bad?

I really don't like the fact that there's a launcher forum now. Launchers are apps, so there will ALWAYS be posts about launchers in the apps forum; it doesn't matter how much you point out that a Launcher forum exists. So, this will just lead to double-posting and a harder time finding the launcher info you're looking for. It's not like the Apps forum is that busy of a forum, so it's easy enough to just skip the launcher threads and move on to a thread about other apps if you're not interested in topics about launchers.

So, what do others think?

I think launcher discussions can go into the apps forum. These launchers are not really operating systems like MacOS and Windows are. They are just applications for the PalmOS. There are times when we have a lot of dicussion about a certain launcher, but this is usually short lived, and we move on to something else. I think a launcher forum is overkill.

Well, you could say the same thing about having a forum for game discussions. After all, games are just a special type of application, just like launchers are. I think that considering how many launcher discussions we have, it's not a bad idea to at least TRY and confine them somewhere else.

I think it is a good idea. At any given time there is at least two or three posts having to do with launchers. It needs to have its place, with discussion focused on specific launchers. ie Zlauncher lounge. Also, I don't think they're applications per say. I would catagorize them more as a utility than an application. Anyway that's my .02.

I also feel this will keep the launcher wars down somewhat. If I have a specific question about a launcher, I don't have to wade through post after post about how another laundcher is better.

I can see where it can be a problem for the moderators, trying to keep launcher posts in the correct forum (the rest of us can help by bashing those that post in the wrong forum:D ) ), but it does seem like it would be convenient for those trying to make a decision about what launcher to buy, to be able to focus their search for information in one forum, without having to wade through post after post about apps they have little interest in. Launchers also seem to represent one of the most active topics on this site.

Keep it separate. It is one of those "special" types of app (or utility), like games, that warrants a forum for the kick and scream, drag' em out, wars. At least we can contain this type of war.

I thought it was a good idea at first, but now I think it should go back to being with the apps. I find that I do not want to look in another forum.

As someone who is has some knowledge of Palms, I would say that Launchers should not be given a separate forum. But the way that Launcher topics keep on popping up in the apps and general forums, there seems to be a distinct need to be addressed. I voted for "yes" I think it is a good idea.

Leave it with the Apps. If not for the launcher comments and questions, the app forum would get rather dull.

DateBK has released new hires icons.
Agendus is a better app.
But I like Wassup.
Try Today its free.

EXCITING STUFF!

Too many forums can just add more confusion. Besides, there are those who pay no attention to it anyway. One user posts his problems in Tips & Tricks, then posts his tips elsewhere.

I can go with it either way, I suppose I prefer it in apps. . .

But I wanted to cast my vote AGAINST an unending thread like ZLauncher lounge.

That thread renders the search function mostly useless, which is a shame because there is really good information buried in it. A couple of attempts to find a search hit in Zlauncher lounge were all it took for me to give up.

I HAVE read the entire thread, more than once, and have followed it from day to day -- but that doesn't mean I remember a specific post on a specific issue later.

Long threads on a specific beta (and there have been long threads on non-launcher apps) are fine; but dumping ALL posts about any one application, launcher or otherwise, into a single thread is just not user-friendly, in my opinion.

If it takes a separate launcher category to permit multiple threads about different issues with one launcher, I'm for it. I do admit I'm more consistent about checking the apps forum -- but I can change <G>.

OH, and also -- if you want to keep the separate launcher category, is it possible to move the EXISTING launcher threads over to it? That would help. . .

If things are too specialized where do you post cross-product issues? FWIW, I think games and apps are about all that's needed. After all, there aren't THAT many launcher posts. At least once we all stop raving about ZLauncher (me included).

And I agree with Anita, trying to focus too much in one thread sort of loses the idea of a thread. Again, IMHO.

Bring the launcher wars back to the apps forum. There are still launcher posts in the apps forum anyway.

I stopped reading ClieSource a couple months ago because there were way too many holy war posts regarding launchers. Very glad that they have their own forum now.
