The Pimlico site says that the upgrade from Datebk 4 to Datebk 5 is free. How is that acheived on my new SJ33. I have no registration code that I'm aware of and the installation of version 5 came in as the 45 day trial version.

Thanks for any help!

You'll need to contact pimlico and they will send you a new code.

The datebook application that comes with the SJ33 is the basic Palm one that comes with OS 4.  If you bought DateBk 4 for another PDA and now want to upgrade to DateBk5, then checking with Pimlico is the right way to get it.  As I recall they have a really good series of FAQ's that may cover how to do this.

I had DateBk+ on my Visor.  After using the default Palm version 2 weeks, I bought DateBk5, and I really like it!:D

Me too! I couldn't live without it. I just bought it online yesterday (I still another 40 days to go on my free trial :D ).

The added functionality compared to plain-old datebook, the icons, and the sheer configurability of the thing is well worth the price-- and the money goes to a good cause.

riverbruce,

In case the previous posts weren't clear, Datebook v4.0 is the standard PalmOS app.

DateBk5 (notice the difference in spelling) v5.0c is a third-party datebook replacement.

The app that DateBk5 is based on is DateBk4. It is actually still available for purchase, but don't confuse Datebook 4.0 (PalmOS) with DateBk4 4.0f (PimlicoSoftware). The 4 in DateBk4 and the 5 in DateBk5 are NOT version numbers.

I am running the trial version of Datebook 5 right now but plan on registering it when the trial comes near its end.

Thanks Mike... that's the word I got from Pimlico. I immediately paid for version 5 and got my registration number 12 hours later. Datebk 5 is great. Hey... 2 Corinthians 5:21 is awesome. My Palm has immensely enhanced my ministry over the years and I'm really enjoying the quality of the SJ33.

how specifically is Datebk 5 different from Datebk 4?

Too much too elaborate. Why not try it for yourself the trial?

Actually, Pimlco has a very good comparison chart, which even includes DateBK+ (Which they wrote for Handspring Visors).  One of the only criticisms I've seen about dateBK software is how each newer version takes so much more memory than the preceeding one.  So if memory in the Clie is running low, than you may want an earlier version.  Since most of the Clie's have 16 Mb, that's usually not that important. YMMV.  Here's a link to the comparison page:

i'm currently trying out datebk5 (day 14 of trial) and will by trying agendus to see which one i prefer.

one thing that i've found is that the program is very unreliable and causes my sj30 to crash. the only other installed programs i have are address plus and the g700 drivers so i don't think there should be a conflict.

does anyone else get this?

one way that makes it crash is if i tap in the day view and type in an entry. the cursor is flashing at the end of the line.

if i then press the down button on the clie to move to the next day, the appointment is copied over to the next day with some screen corruption and then soon after it will give an error and crash.

also, the floating events don't seem to be auto-advancing!

Very strange. I've been using DateBk5 from day one. First on a Visor Pro and now on my SJ30, no crashing and extremely reliable. Has to be something odd going on, maybe with your installation. Maybe others can give feedback on what to try to fix.

I tried this since it's not something I would normally do and did not get that error. Perhaps you should uninstall and re-install Datebk5+. Since all the data is stored in the DateBook and ToDo databases you won't loose any data.

Also, you have to set the floats to advance.

The icons? I just downloaded a trial version and am trying to fuddle my way through it. Pretty overwhelming difference over the clie datebook!! Do you mean the few different "view" type icons or is there something lovely and fantastic that I'm missing?

Bison, icons can be assigned to individual events. There are several sets available on PalmGear, etc., and you can manage them with dbicon+ (included with DateBk5) or IconManager. The DateBk5 zip file contains several demo sets.

Read the documentation that should be included with DateBk5 for more info.

hey any idea how to get rid of the old Palm OS Date Book then?

PDA gadgetfreak

no need to get rid of the old Palm OS date book....it's burned in the ROM. DateBk5 and the OS datebook use the same file for your records. If you have Flash ROM you can reburn the ROM but unless you need the space....why bother? If you read the included instruction manual, it will talk about this there.
