You can transfer the files in several ways:
1) Use a card reader to copy the MP3 files into the SD card
2) Use Card Export II (www.softick.com) - this will make your card look like a removable drive on the PC.

If you are using the default RealOne player, the files must be placed in /RN_AUDIO

If you want a nicer player that can be skinned and play wav and ogg files, try the following programs:
* Pocket Tunes (www.normsoft.com)
* Aeroplayer (http://www.aerodrome.us/)
* MMPlayer (www.mmplayer.com)

All are shareware with evaluation periods. It's worth the extra cost if you intend to use your PDA as an MP3 player a lot! :)

I sure wish PalmOne had provided RealOne Player as an add-on and not placed it in ROM. I don't like it, and already have a registered copy of Aeroplayer which I like immensly more than R1.

Oh I myself do agree as well :) Third party players are so much better, I myself am using Aeroplayer as well. Very much better features as per comapared to RealOne :)

hardware :
- Buy a card reader. Insert your SD in a card reader & copy your mp3 files to your card

software:
- try PInstall (http://www.palmgear.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=software.showsoftware&SID=1B34F070-CF18-ADC1-A67EBC832D7F2A69&PartnerREF=&prodID=7146) (Freeware)
Select "Expension card install directory" in options menu
click "Add to card", choose your mp3 files
push hotsync button..... ;)

Or, get Softick's Card Export II (http://www.softick.com/cardexport2/) ...it lets you mount your SD card on your PC desktop as if it were another drive.
Then, make sure all your music is in MP3 format. If you buy a lot of music from a particular company (iTunes, RealPlayer, Napster, etc.), burn it to a CD, then re-rip it onto your PC using one of the aforementioned players as an MP3.
Once you've done that, use Card Export II to make your SD card show up on your PC, navigate to the MP3's you want on the card, then just drag and drop them onto the "Audio" folder of your SD card.

i dont know how to copy songs to a cd. i tryed to but it says that since its an m4p file i cant do anything with it. i guess my last chance at getting this song onto my palm pilot is to copy it with a microphone and call it a .wav file.

gina-
What operating system do you have on your computer? If you're using Windows XP, you can use Windows Media Player (version 10 has native MP3 ripping capabilities), Napster, iTunes for Windows or even WinAmp.
If we know what kind of specs you have, and what media player you have, then we can help you to rip music to CD's, get music onto your handheld or any other stuff like that!

Just as a note,
After trying to transfer files through all kinds of method, I almost gave in to buying the extra software (card export).
But then I discoverd that the realplayer plug-in is working really fast! 10-15 seconds to transfer a 2.5MB file from my computer to my T|T using a 256MB kingston card.

p.s. sorry for reviving a dead thread, but I didn't see it mention in any place during my search.
