View Full Version : Green links with popup text boxes

Banner ads I can live with, but I HATE these things. Your reading along and moving the cursor around the page and BAM! you need to stop because a popup text box just blocked half the paragraph and you need to wait for it to close.
I also must assume it's this new feature that keeps causing the new warning message, "A script on this site is causing this page to load slow. Do you want to abort running scripts on this page? [OK] [CANCEL].
Is this totally necessary? It seems like last time this happened it was an oversight after an upgrade.
It's kind of funny that so many discussion board owners are telling members to get Mozilla Firefox and turn on adblocking. Could it be that this advise is cutting down on banner click-through revenue, and causing a need for more intrusive methods of generating advertising dollars?

The green links have been there since ClieSource. I'll try to see what I can do to hide them from registered members.

Thanks Reggie.
Except for one brief period long ago, I'd never seen them until yesterday.

uggghhhhhh.
I was coming to complain about them too.
Seeing them everywhere ):
Makes every post seems like pimping. Worst style of ads I`ve seen. Prefer Pop up Hell.
Glad to know you intend on killing them for reg`ed users :)

These kinds of ads are IMHO more misleading and frustrating than any other kind of ad. In AdBlock for Firefox, block *intellitxt* to permanently 'disable' them.

Thanks zackepceo.
They keep slowing down my browser. I click to scroll and it takes a few seconds to respond - over and over and ...
After a minute and a half on this page, I still see "Transferring data from tribal.us.intellitxt.com..." in the status bar.

I agree with zackepceo. These ads are more misleading and frustrating than any other type. They look like regular links and are in the actual text of the page making it hard to tell them from real links. As for computers being slow, that has little to do with it. I have a fast computer, over a cable modem, and while the main part of the page has rendered I can still see it loading these ads in the background.

Not SUPER fast, but hardly slow. AMD 3200XP (1gb ram).

I just killed the script - killed the google ads too. Now full screen really is full screen.

The links don't so much slow the computer down, they slow down browsing. If your mouse hits one, it pops up the thingy and that just totally throws off the thing.

Do you mean these links? screen, modem, computer, copy, Tungsten, music player, PDA, memory card, phones, digital assistants, gameboy, RAM, memory stick, software, handheld, Sony, Windows XP, Jpeg, wifi, processor, palm, camcorders ?
Yes I also hate them!!

The easy way to get rid of them... hmm. I would make a script for it, but some people's computers might have a different windir...
Other than changing the hosts file (if you don't know, don't ask), and I reitorate, Firefox with AdBlock is your friend.

I agree! These new ads (adwords?) really, really SUCK! Reggie says they've always been here, but I've never seen them until a few days ago. They are sneeky, misleading and annoying. They get easily confused with the 'real' links people put in their posts. Please make them go away! I tried to find a link where I can donate money (couldn't find one) so 1src won't need to resort to this type of advertising. YUK!

Thanks for the tips zackepceo!
With a little patience and research I was able to figure out what to do with the HOSTS file. I also installed Adblock in Firefox. Now, no matter which browser I'm using, no more nasty little adwords!

I have (thankfully) never seen the little blighters of which you speak.
Probably because I run both Mozilla (http://www.mozilla.org) as well as Privoxy (http://www.privoxy.org). A truly Zen-like combination.
When ads get so intrusive that people go and find anything they can to turn them all off, it winds up being far worse for the site than if they just had a few benign banner ads that people would probably let through.

I too have followed zack's instructions and installed Adblock in Firefox.(added the word intellitxt in the 'New Filter' box in Preferences). Now...no more pesky google-style keyword ads in the body of posts. AND...browsing is noticably faster. :D

I also suggest getting the Single Window extention. Tabbed browsing is something that Ie users do not have the luxury of, and that's a shame.

It's too bad Firefox is unuseable with XP SP2. I get some really annoying and funky behavior with Firefox now.

Interesting you say this. I have noticed FF crashing like mad since I installed SP2 - like AT LEAST twice per session. VERY frustrating..to say the least.
But we have to remember...Firefox is still not even a 1.0 release yet. So I guess problems are to be expected.

You can just use %systemroot% to take you to the windows directory (e.g. %systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts will take you to just about anyones hosts file).

Use SamCat's idea of adding the following to your hosts (%systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts) file:
127.0.0.1 tribal.us.intellitxt.com
127.0.0.1 jupiter.us.intellitxt.com

For more information on the HOSTS file and what to do with it go here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm). In addition there are some cool little utilities like how to make a shortcut on your desktop to edit the hosts file on the fly, as well as a nifty .bat file to rename the hosts file to turn it on and off.

1. As a contributing member, I don't think I should be required to see them at all!
I still do see them, and agree that they are evil, and do this place no good in any other way than helping the guys who run this joint pay the bills. That I support obviously, but not at the expense of the place's image.
2. How can I remove or block adwords myself if I choose to be the apparent sheep I am and continue to use Internet Explorer?

Open the windows/system32/hosts/hosts file in notepad (yes, it has no extention. welcome to windows trying to be mac os x and *nix in general). Add:
127.0.0.1 tribal.us.intellitxt.com
127.0.0.1 jupiter.us.intellitxt.com
127.0.0.1 itxt.vibrantmedia.com
But I can not stress enough that Firefox is sooooooooo much better in every way than internet explorer. I, for one, would not trust something that is obviously not a set-in-stone program that has not had a major update in 3 years, which is exactly what internet exploder is.

Supposedly only nonregged members are supposed to see them, but for some reason unknown to us (probably something to do with a VB update), we can see them now.

I have made a pretty detailed thread in the General forum about removing these ads. If you will, continue this discussion there, where it is more visible.

I tot I was infected by adware and spyware and hence the green links with pop up text boxes! I didn't notice this thread until today. Thank you ppl for bringing this up! :)
Btw, I've never come across it in CS too. Even when I am not logged on. So weird.

If you use IE, you probably have adware & spyware as well. It's inevitable if you use the IE engine.

My experience: when I use firefox running on a linux box I don't see any green ads, when using firefox on a box running windows (xp pro) I have to block the addresses with adblock. It could also be the version of firefox I'm using (beta > 0.9.2 on linux, 0.9.2 on windows).

I'm using avantbrowser and I still see the ads when I am logged in. Probably because avant browser is based off of IE.
