View Full Version : "Sniffer" for NX70 / OS 5
ClieMax

Hi,
lots of you try to just open their WLAN to find if there is any HotSpot - try and error method. Is there any kind of sniffer to show me (by scanning) if there is an access point or not. That would help very much. If it is locked then, well, bad, but what about all the other open HotSpots, nobody knows about.
Once someone was talking about LANStatus, but it is just close to that what I mean. Anything better than LANStatus?

Not that I know of....
Did you try LANStatus?
Did it work for you?

Anyone have a link for LANStatus?
It was my understanding that there was nothing available for the clie.
Thanks!

This post got me curious.
Only eference I coud find was on a German site (http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=de&u=http://www.braunstein.de/pda/palm/handerawlan.html) (translated thanks to Google).
I downloaded the application (search for NetStatus on the page linked above) and loaded it up on my NX70. No crashes.
The NetStatus app is a "Discovery" tool provided by Handera for thier 330 model, and while it doesn't crash, it doesn't appear to do much either. I'll play around more with it when I get home.
Try it out, but remember to backup first, and keep your original driver CD handy just in case.

Unfortunately, I am unable to find a link for the LANStatus app itself. Thanks for the thread link!

Thank you kind sir! Only the one prc file works, the others are probably Handera specific. Right, it doesn't do a whole lot, signal strength would have been nice.

While the intended purpose of lanstatus is to see available connections it does not do that on the Clie as of yet. The info that you mentioned is pretty much already available in by using going to the options>log and typing info. What is needed is an application that will show you all of the available signals and their relative strengths. This would really not be difficult and similar apps have been made for PPC. The reason that this would be so useful is that you could then go to a park, office, airport, coffee shop and actually see which signal you want and where to sit to get the best signal. It would also help in setting up a home network. ie. should i have the wireless router on the ground or on the desk... I really wish that people would stay focused on an app that shows signal strenght instead of being satisfied with the "any" function....

I got all that and just from the one file. The other files don't function on the clie. Additionally, it's not what users are really looking for. finger123 explains it better.
The name of the file is LANStatus.prc

I put it on, played with it last night, and then deleted it ...
As mentioned before the Network Log file has access to much the same info, and if you check out the MAC address from LANStatus - it is WRONG anyway.
I'll wait for an app that actually does signal strength, will scan correctly, and reports accurate information.
