Hi, need some help (no luck on the Wireless forum yet).
I have an NX series Clie. I am thinking of getting the Sony WiFi card.
I would like to use it at my school's Wireless LAN. I e-mailed them about accesibility to PDAs. They said they don't support it, and i can't get in as they require VPN authentication. They said there isn't a VPN client for PDAs.
Did they mean, THEY don't have a VPN client, or PDA VPN clients aren't compatible with their systems (Cisco 5000)?
Any recommendations on a Clie compatible VPN client?

The only Palm VPN client I've seen is from Mergic, www.mergic.com, and unfortunately it's not compatible with OS5/NX70

The client is named movian:

Q. Do you support the Treo and Tungsten devices?
We will have support the Tungsten and Treo device in a upcoming update to movianVPN 3.0. The Treo 180 and Treo 270 which works on the GSM network seems to work with movian at this time.
If tungsten will be supported soon so will Clié - So mormegil have patience. By the way I heard rumours about vpn actually being integrated in palmOS5.

It goes back there being no VPN support yet for the NX. Additionally, does the school LAN use short or long preamble on the Cisco system? Keep in mind there also can be other factors such as LEAP(I have no idea what it is), that supposedly is not compatible with the Sony.
My whole point is to ask lots of questions for any pitfalls you might encounter as some others have.

This, unfortunately, does not seem to be the case. According to to the people at Mergic, Sony uses some proprietary extensions to get the CF slot to work with PalmOS. And while they are looking into the problem, the CLIE may not be supported at all. Different company, I know, but the problems are the same -- Sony is not providing the information developers need to create solutions.

Hmm.. I've tried Mergic before, it definitely is not compatible with OS5.
Movian, on the other hand, seemed to work fine with the Sony Wifi module. Unfortunately, I could get it to work with my office Windows based VPN solution. I sent a mail to the Certicom chaps and confirmed that MovianVPN does not support the said MS configuration..

Well, if it means anything to anyone, my school uses IPSEC, not PPTP. I don't know if this will be a problem or not.
Thanks for all the help so far. I still haven't got the card. I want to find out what the WL110 is before I go and get a WL100. I don't want to buy something that'll be obsolete in a few weeks (unless of course it's a Clie)

Keep in mind that if your clie vpn client (I have used certicom in the past a few years ago when it first came out) only supports lower encription levels your school or companie's vpn server has to accept those lower encription levels to let you in. At the time I think it (certicom's) only supported 40 bit and you needed a specific model of cisco vpn to connect in with. I don't remmber which one. so make sure you call who ever your thinking about using and get the stats on you vpn's server before you commit to buying. Make sure you can get a demo to work first. Certicom was very helpful in working with me at the time. But I had access to change the settings on our VPN for my tests. Which you probably won't.
Just my two cents.

LEAP is Cisco's wireless security protocol, and stands for Lightweight Extensible Authentication Protocol. It is typically built into Cisco wireless cards. Since Cisco routers also use LEAP, the two are made to work together, especially if LEAP is enabled on the router.
Cisco very recently started licensing LEAP to other hardware manufacturers, so I wouldn't expect to see in a Sony card right away (or at all, knowing Sony).
I tried to do the same thing here at the lab, but since there are no Cisco cards/drivers for OS5, I wasn't able to get anywhere with it.

Somewhere in another thread, someone said that the movianVPN client doesn't support Microsoft VPN. One of the network guys at my office said, "We use a Vernier VPN server - is there a PPTP or Microsoft choice?"
Obviously, there is no such choice. I emailed Certicom to see if they have any suggestions.

I am a little unclear what you say there, is it the vpn working for you? ( I really hope that will work )

I use WinHand with my NX70v. It works like a charm. I'm printing wirelessly via my Wifi card through NetGear router to a Motorola Surfboard cable modem to my 1.7 GHz Dimension 8200 running XP. Like I said, I have complete control over my desktop from my NX70v.

Unfortunately, no hi-res+ support. Only 320x320, three zoom options, and 256 or less colors. Still great, though. Speed needs some work, but it's usable. Oh, and the Win-Hand desktop counterpart needs to be installed on the desktop and active. It's an FTP server... or something. It's free without security, or $30 with it, I think. Still, I have the free version and I haven't gotten attacked in the few months I've had it.
