staples misrepresented their plan when i bought it. i was explicitly informed that i would not have to go through Palm if my PDA broke during the first two years. now that it broke, i was told yesterday to call a certain #, tell them what's wrong, and that i would be called back with an address by noon today telling me where i could bring it to a repair center where presuming it could not be fixed, i could then call the # again and they would send me "a coupon" for the amt i originally paid. today, after no one called me back by noon, i called back only to be told that i had to go through Palm since it has been less than a year since I bought the PDA. Now, I never would have bought from staples in the first place had they not explicitly told me at the time of my purchase that i would not have to go through Palm, period. neither Best Buy nor compusa makes you go through this bullsh*t. i will never buy a pda from staples again.

There is a long-time slogan at Anantech Forums that you see in sig files - "Staples Is Suck".

Interestingly, I got slammed by many when I reported that the same thing happened to me when I was lied to by BustBuy about the extended warranty on my laptop. Folks jumped all over me that it was my fault for believing what I was told and not reading the fine print and devining how it was that the manager would decide to impliment that fine print 4 months later.

So, Dunadan, get ready for the "holyer than though" to get on your case and blame the victim. I, for one, and with you. Thanks for the heads up; and keep my story in mind when deciding whether or not to shop at BustBuy (I choose NOT).

I'm not sure I understand what you were trying to say. I think the gist of it, is people who buy Extended Warranties are stupid.
Umm. Extended warranties may not be for you. But, if you NEED your PDA to function at work or such, then an Extended Warranty is a good idea. I work a block away from a Best Buy, so when (not IF) the PDA breaks down, I can be up an running within a couple of hours. Otherwise, I either have to mail the PDA to Sony, or buy a new one. That can take days or lots of money, respectively.
I myself, have replaced my Clie, 5 times! All under the same extended warranty ($60). See my post (last one at this point) on this thread for details: http://www.cliesource.com/forums/showthread.php?postid=78101
So don't call somebody stupid for buying an extended warranty. Maybe, your PDA is just a toy to you, but it's a necessity to others.
BTW: Dunadan, nice name...or should I say Ellesar?

The experience I have had with extended warranties is, for me, not to get one. Best Buys policy is with Sony products you have to deal with Sony for the first year unless you return the item within the first 14 days. Besides sometimes they usually figure out a way not to honor the warranty. I figure for me, since the extended warranty does not kick in until after the original warranty expires why do it since I will probably be drooling over whatever is new at the time.

I took it to Best Buy, explained the problem, and walked out of the store with an NX. No problems and no dealing with Sony.

Well, that's interesting. I didn't have that experience (I'm the Unregistered person up there with 6 Clies under one warranty- odd, since I logged in).
When I puchased the warranty in February 2002, there was no clause about Sony for the 1st year. Within a month, I was back at Best Buy, and got an exchange.
If this is the current warranty policy, then it sucks, and may not be worth it.

I love Canada and Future Shop extended warranties.
I have the three year extended warranty on my Clie.
I can use it as many times as I want, and I have. As long it doesn't look like the problem is my fault (I threw it to the ground) they have replaced it for me. Also I know first hand that they will 99% of the time not repair it because they send it to Sony to get repaired and Sony gives them a large repair bill, so they always replace it. Also if within that three years it breaks, and if they don't carry it anymore I get the amount that I paid including tax towards any one I want.

Compusa has a great waranty also, they just look at the pda for a minute then get you going with a new one in 10 minutes!!

I have to agree...ComUSA has the best warranty of them all currently...even though some on this forum have said they have had luck with BestBuy's...if you look at the contract...it "legally" isn't good...since they don't cover for broken screens or physical damage...or damage due to abuse....it even has in the contract they can attempt to repair it which can take weeks...before considering to replace it...although the good thing is it isn't a one time thing and can last up to 3 years....the CompUSA warranty is only one time but covers broken screens, or really any kind of damage....including theft!!!
I definitely think the salesperson shouldn't have misled you...but at the same time...guess who he is looking out for....NOT YOU!!! therefore like car dealers and mechanics...you can't trust them...In the most nicest way...READ THE CONTRACT...it'll save you many headaches in the future....

I've had good luck with the Best buy warranty. Nothing wrong with it at all.

thanks for all the replies.
I actually did read the contract, which states the following:
Provides one screen replacement during the term of the Plan
Truth: the plan only covers the second year, so if your manufacturer's warranty doesn't cover a screen replacement, yours isn't covered for the first year.
Please refer to your original receipt for the Plan terms
Truth: the only thing my original receipt says about the plan is "2 YR DOP PDA W/ SCR 39.99N"
Plans are inclusive of the manufacturer's warranty.
That's where they got me. If you ask me, that wording is too ambiguous. At any rate, a verbal contract is just as binding as a written one, and the Staples salesman lied to me in far less ambiguous terms.

It's just trying to prove the verbal contract that is the difficult part. Maybe some TV news shows should do an undercover story on these situations, since they seem to be very common.

extended warranties are pot luck
all depends what time and who is the person behind the desk
it does not matter if it is best buy/compusa/cirucit city/staples
i have heard horror stories and experiencied one myself
I will never buy another extended warranty ever again...these stores are making millions off of it, by decieivng and being unethical

Actually it is not pot luck with compusa, it is their policy to take the old one and get you the same one, or a comparable model. This means that they don't necessarily have to give you the same brand, just an item with comparable specs.

Not true there are countelss threads all over, where compusa will give ou a hard time or want to send it back, sometimes they will give it to you other they wont
like i said all pot luck, i think better off just sending it back to sony and not spend extra money on scam warranties

i have never sent a clie back to sony, but my experience with sending other products back to sony (minidisc players, etc) has been much worse than pot luck.
in my opinion, any warranty that let's one get a new pda on the spot in the store (compusa, best buy, etc) is better than one where you have to negotiate with an insurance company and then jump through the hoops they set before you (staples). only thing staples has on bb and cusa is that they pricematch websites.
