Can't turn ON when "closed"

When you close the NR the device is put on "HOLD". That way you can't accidentally turn on the handheld by pressing any of the buttons.

The unit should put itself into "hold" if you close it up while it's turned on (that is, closing it with the screen facing inward). The green power button will stay lit.

If you close the unit while it's turned off, you won't be able to turn it on while it's closed.

In tablet mode, however, you will still need to slide the "hold" switch to put it in hold-- you can turn it on and off in tablet mode just as if it were open.

The NX series is different-you have to put it on hold no matter what to disable the buttons. I like this setup better than when I had my NR b/c I can control the audio with it closed if I don't have my remote with me.
