I'm trying to figure out what Memory sticks are compatable with the Sony Clie T665. I've just recently secured one over the past week and I'm looking to store photos and/or MP3's on it while I'm on the go. So far, from what I've been told by Sony, is that the MagicGate cards from Sony alone are the only ones that are compatable.

While that would be all good and fine, I'm not wasting money on a card that I could pick up for $20 or more cheaper from Walmart.com. (They have a 128MB SanDisk Memory Stick w/ MagicGate on their site.)

Please help a newbie out with his Clie - which I love by the way.

If possible, you may e-mail me at wireless_rebel at yahoo dot com.

You don't need to buy a Sony brand card and certainly don't need Magic Gate, which is Sony's draconian music copyright scheme. The T665 can use either the 128 mb "purple" MS or the 256 mb MSSelect which is two memory sticks in one case. You have to use a switch on the case to go from one stick to the other. The T665, or any other non-OS 5 Clie, can't use the MS Pro.

You can get a good quality Lexar brand 128 mb MS at http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=10321195&dcaid=1688 for less than $42.

With a Lexar stick, I'd be able to use the Sonic Stage software that came with the Clie?

Or....

Is there another application that I should use/download to play MP3 files on this handheld/PDA?

For the T665, for playing MP3s:

You ONLY need the normal Purple MemorySticks.
The White MagicGate one are ONLY if you want to play ATRAC music files (Sony propriatory format, has copy protection crap).

I recommend you get a 128MB normal purple MemoryStick (Should be cheap and easy to find).
Then, make sure ALL the MP3s you want to play are encoded at 44.1kHz. This is the only restriction; Other than that they can be Stereo/Mono, CBR/VBR and the bitrate can range anywhere from 40kbps to 256kbps.

Once you got that, just copy them to the \PALM\Programs\MSAUDIO directory on the MS by any means you have (Either using MSImport or a memorycard reader) and you'll be able to play them with the T665 AudioPlayer ;)

As an aside, if you ever get an OS5 Clie, ALL OS5 Clies have less capable DSP chips than the T665, and N/NR-series Clies, in that they HAVE to be fed CBR MP3s; VBR ones will get rejected with a totally misleading error message :)

I tell you this as I had to transcode all 128MBs of MP3s from my T665 to CBR so that my (then) shiney new TH55 could play them... and boy was that fun! (not!)
