Can't Switch From Letters to Numbers on Typepad

I was attempting to enter an appointment on my T-3 today and when I tapped the number pad ("123") at the bottom of the type pad, all I got was a little beep. It wouldn't switch to the number pad. I tried a soft reset to no avail. Interestingly, when I tap the number pad, the space bar under the type pad appears to be pressed. This seems to occur no mater what applicaton I am trying to use (Agendus, SuperNames, Memo, etc.) Any ideas?

Did some reading of other posts and now think my problem has to do with the digitizer. I've reset that via preferences and now I can switch to the number pad if I tap on the very bottom of the number pad. Is sounding like a digitizer problem?
