View Full Version : Wi-Fi connection problems in public zones

Here's the problem: I've set my TH55 to connect to my encrypted wi fi network with no problems at all, but whenever I try and connect to free public wi-fi networks (e.g. free café networks), the Clie detects the network, and then keeps on retrying to connect before timing out.
Everything is set to auto and other people around me have had no problem connecting to the network - so why won't the TH55 join them?!
I felt a right chump fiddling about with my Clie while smug Mac/PC laptop owners were all surfing away....
Any ideas?
I tried everything but manually entering the DNS/IP details because I had no idea what they are.

Hmm, did you go into the network settings and set it to scan for wireless access points? I did that with my own home wireless set up, at Panera Bread, and at Starbucks, and all worked fine. I didn't even mess with any settings, just set it to scan and it connected with the found network. Do you have the "service" set to "Wireless LAN"?
Sorry I can't be of more help, I'm sure you've probably already thought of this stuff...

This generally happens when the site's main access portal page is poorly designed/formatted, i.e. too large for a PDA to handle. This happened to me at a national chain cafe. There's nothing you can do until they redesign their portal to be device agnostic. I have found the local employees, even manager generally don't have a clue and are of limited help in these matters. :(

Hmm, did you go into the network settings and set it to scan for wireless access points? Yep. And in the last two unsuccessful attempts, the network showed up just fine, I tried to connect and got endless 'retrying' errors

So has anyone else had trouble connecting in public zones?
Or is it just me? Eek!

I thought it was just me who was having problems.
I scanned for a connection first, set everything to auto and still have problems connecting.
When it is retrying I pressed the wifi connection button at the bottom of the TH and it said that I was connected successfully. After closing the screen it was still trying to connect.
A co-worker has a MAC laptop and was able to connect without a problem.

Again, it's the incompatibility of their portal web page and NetFront!

Ah-ha, wellsjs has found the answer, I believe! Where was it that you were having problems connecting? I know that, until I reconfigured my NetFront settings to "fool" the WAP into thinking it was MSIE, I had difficulty accessing the WiFi spot at one of the local cafes I like to frequent...hopefully that will help!! For help on changing those settings, just do a forum search for "changing netfront user agent".

Hi wellsjs, If the access portal page is too large for netfront to handle, can one changes the cache size or other things like user agent to make it work?
Thanks

Yup! Go to "NetFront Settings" pg.1, and at the bottom of the screen is an option for the Cache size: "Diable, 300KB, 600KB, 900KB, 1200KB, or 1500KB", although I usually keep my set on 300, and I've never had problems!
