The p7 beta of v5.0c of DB5 was released tonight in the DB5 Yahoo forum, and it is very nice!!! I'm not sure how different it looks on OS4 devices, but on the NX, it just looks amazing!!!

The list of updates was a mile long, but I'll put the big ones I've noticed here:

1) Takes advantage of high-density icons. And not just the icons that you attach to an appt, but all icons in the app are high-density now, including the todo checkboxes, and note, alarm, repeat, and link icons that go on the appt lines. Looks very nice!!

2) For those with 20/5 vision, this version allows tiny fonts in the day view now. I have one page that has 15 lines showing, and the screen is not even half full!! But it is very, very small. I wish there was a small bold option like in the SplashData products and ZL.

3) The T&H pop-up list for appointments puts the appointment at the top of the list, I guess so you can remember what you're editing.

4) In the advanced settings list, there are now options to remove underline dots from Standard fonts, tiny fonts, and notes, and this works very nicely. No more Colorize workarounds are required. This is one of the hardest menus to find. To get to it, you go to Preferences, then hit the Menu button again, and choose Advanced Settings.

5) Also in Advanced Settings is an option to track icons by resource ID, as opposed to the default of location. For icon users, this gives you the option of editing your icon set and moving icons around within the set and DB5 will still have the correct icon for your appointments.

Wow.. this is amazing. Datebk5 is most likely the app I use most on my NX, and now it looks so much nicer.

I do hope we see a font inbetween Tiny and Standard though. Tiny is too small for a quick glance of your upcomming appointments. Mine will stay at standard for the time being.

I turned the dotted lines off, and it looked so odd... I have grown so used to seeing them there. Very nice option.

I think the best compromise is to use tiny fonts, but use large bold as the default (to do this, go to the edit menu and go to fonts at the bottom). Only one problem: at least on my nx70v, the default changes back to normal as soon as you exit datebk5 - anyone else have this problem?

Too bad no hi-res icon support for os 4.x machines yet :(

Go to the pimlico forum on Yahoo! and put in your request - better yet, email the developer directly.    The more people ask for it, the more likely it will get included.

I joined the yahoo group as instructed and all I can see is preview #6 -- which is there another yahoo group?

If you go to the group page at Yahoo groups' website, the link to the preview post is included in message #29772.

Okay - finally got it. From what I can read the tiny fonts option is still only available for 0s5 devices?

Yes, that's true. OS4 devices may get high-density icons in DB5 at some point, but they will never have tiny fonts in the Day view due to the differences in Palm OS table handling between OS4 and OS5.

Why do you get high res support in day view with Agendus under OS 4.X?

Because Agendus doesn't offer in-line editing, so it's not affected by Palm OS tables in the same way. For those that don't know what in-line editing means, with Agendus, to change the text for an appointment, you have to go to a details screen, whereas with DB5, you can just type the new text in on the line.

But am strongly leaning toward DTBK5. Can I/Should I download this Beta, or the one on the Pimlico website?

If you have a startup view this will happen unless you click on the diamond then hit change and startup.

However, that's not necessarily true of p7, as he changed a LOT of stuff. That said, I haven't had a single problem on my NX, and the stuff I have seen reported so far seems very minor and mostly cosmetic. If you are looking for stability, get the p6 beta. If you are really anal about nothing possibly being messed up, get the older release version. And if you're willing to deal with a few minor cosmetic issues (or not, as in my case), get the p7 beta. If you have an NX, you probably want one of the betas, as the last release version didn't support OS5 properly.

I know that currently custom alarms won't work (i.e. ones you record yourself on the NX for example) in Datebk5. But, if I do not check the box to have datebook handle the alarms, then will I still get them from the regular datebook? Thanks!

Are there any advantages in DB5c for OS4.1 greyscale users i.e. T415/SL10/SL20 users?

You can go into the Datebook and set your alarm sound. But, with the regular datebook, you have one alarm total, not a different alarm for each appointment. So, if you want to use an alarm you made for every alarm, then what you proposed will work, provided you don't want the snooze and other options that the DB5 alarm screen has.

That was what I thought.
Since this is my first time using datebk5, I'm still low on the learning curve. In fact, I can't even figure out what 1/2 the icons are :D , and I don't remember where I saw options about 3 minutes later. Oh well, I'll learn....

Just be glad you weren't trying it about a year ago, before he redid the menus to make it MUCH easier to find things. I've been using DB5 for almost 3 years and I still don't know half the things that it can do!! So I think we're all still on it's learning curve :)

I've even gone so far as to write my prefs down in MS Word because I'll forget a little "tweak" that I like.
<sigh> It's so much fun growing old!
