Whenever I plug the USB cable into the bottom of the Z72 my PC makes a beep or two. I assume this is software on the Z72 connecting (or trying to connect) to the PC. Does anyone have specific details of which Z72 app is doing this?

If you're running Windows XP, that's probably the sound Windows makes by default when new hardware is detected. If you want to get rid of it, go into the "Sounds" in your control panel.

Bad Andy ... operative word "probably" suggests uncertainty or unknowing.

Since I have my Zire connected to both Win98 and WinME, I can confidently tell you it has nothing directly to do the the Windows OS. The beep is in the Zire's software/hardware to indicate connection using Windows' USB port. You can disable the sound by going into the Zire's Preferences program. Tap on the Sounds & Alerts option and select "off" from the menu. Voila!

However, you do need to know that selecting the "off" sound preference will disable all of the sounds in your Zire.

Nope. The beep is definitely from Windows XP. Also, when I plug the USB cable into the Z72 when the Z72 is turned off, the Z72 turns on. If the Z72 is not connected to the charger it turns off after a short period (I know this is normal). When the Z72 turns itself off, Windows XP makes a couple of beeps.

My question stands. What Palm app is trying to make an automatic (non hotsync) connection to the PC?

- you said "when I plug the USB cable into the Z72 when the Z72 is turned off, the Z72 turns on." , this is normal.
- you said "When the Z72 turns itself off, Windows XP makes a couple of beeps." , i am sure this is not right, the beeps is coming from the z72. do one thing; do not connect ur z72 to usb cable/pc and wait until it switch-off by itself, the z72 will beep twice i'm sure.
-next is "My question stands. What Palm app is trying to make an automatic (non hotsync) connection to the PC? = maybe u are refering to the z72 turning ON when u connect usb cable to it & the other end of usb cable is connected to pc, my answer to that is, i believe PALM application software has nothing to do with it yet, it is still on the level of the palm operating system (w/c is different from app programs) and the pc operating system sending/receiving "handshaking" signals. Lastly, you are right (referring to the thread title) 'zire72 beep'. ;) ;)

Nope.
When Z72 not connected to PC and it Z72 switches itself off - no beeps.
When Z72 connected to PC and Z72 switches itself off - two beeps on PC. This happens if no power cord is attached to the Z72 or if the power cord is attached and "on while recharging" in Prefs/power is OFF.

I think you are right about the handshaking signals. It's just odd that neither my T3 nor my NZ 90 cause such beeps.

"When Z72 not connected to PC and it Z72 switches itself off - no beeps" - i played with my z72 settings and manage to set it with no beep sound when switches it self off, (pref - sounds & alerts - off), when set to H (HIGH) it gives a 'single' beep indicating the z72 is switching off.

" When Z72 connected to PC and Z72 switches itself off - two beeps on PC" - on this case, i can not make my pc to beep, tried different settings on my z72 but still no beep. by the way i got XP prof on my desktop. i'll post it right away if i find anything interesting.........this is my very first pda and i thank u and this forum for all the info that i am getting.... :) :) :)

I got lost in all of these posts... basically both of these guys are right. Windows XP does make a noise when a USB device is plugged in. Also, if you do not turn off your system sound under Sounds and Alerts in Preferences, there will be a beep whenever you hot sync. Now as far as the rest of the posts... I was utterly lost ;-)
